Before even watching the video, I'm asking the question that stumped every Wehrmacht commander: "Then what?" The attack succeeds, they take Antwerp, and secure some fuel. How do they hold it? What stops the Allies from severing the gap the Germans make in that line? How is a port city like Antwerp safe from Allied naval forces? Even more importantly, how does taking Antwerp keep the Soviets out of Eastern Germany, and how does it stop the Allied forces in Italy from pushing North. I'm not sure I agree with the idea that the outcome in WWII was always a forgone conclusion, but it definitely was by December 1944.

I love the conclusion - 'If things had been different, they would not have been any different' :D

Belgian here, I don't undestand what Copson says about Antwerp. It was the first port taken without much damage, due to resistance and British, takiing Germans off guard around Antwerp, liberated sep 4th. But Antwerp is a special port, 100 km inland, and Germans still controlled both sides untill sea. Montgommery chose to use his army to try to cross the Rhine at Arnhem. Then it took 2 months to liberate river banks. First ship delivered supplies on november 28. Antwerp was all about logistics providing allied troops all they needed. Germans wanted to disrupt this.

It would have made more sense for the Germans to dig in along the Rhine and say 'here we are. Come and get us!'

If you do what the German Generals wanted, to defend the Rhine more effectively,
the crushing Soviet blow coming through East Prussia and the Hungarian oil fields (the last available to them) still immobilises the motorised parts of their Army by Spring 1945. After Bagration and Falaise in summer 1944 the main forces of Germany’s East & West Armies had been destroyed leaving the Allies in Paris and outside Warsaw. In the words of Rundstedt to Keitel (between D-Day & Falaise) “Make peace you fools!” was the only sound option that could have benefitted Germany. Beyond Summer 1944 it was mostly German cities that were being destroyed and taken.

James,
Thanks indeed for this interesting discussion with the two Chrises on the success or otherwise of the German attack in the Battle of the Bulge!

A great video and discussion. If Hitler had delayed the inevitable a few months, we get into the Bomb scenario time frame. Would the US have dropped it somewhere on Germany first like in central Berlin? Or some other place? I think Truman would have done it.

Get some flags and command staves for use on that map! would add to the discussion and its presentation, and give the presenters a more interactive role!

A more interesting variable would have the release of the troops in the German replacement army during the fighting at d-day. If the Germans could have kept their strength up the breakout might have been greatly delayed.
