I am third generation Japanese, born in Brazil. I only got to know my grandmothers and both weren’t like this. They kept and accumulated all sorts of things, even a tiny peace of paper 😅

I lived with 4 different host families during my stay in Japan. Most of them had very cluttered kitchens! My boyfriend's family had little knick-knacks FILLING their house, not even the toilet room was free of the ornaments.

I have loads of useless items that i really thought i needed but since i am recovering from a nasty disease i can't pronounce, i realised that i didn't miss the items and enjoy the space more

And Japanese homes are very small, so they HAVE to not have things laying around. They just don't have the room to store things, but the Japanese aren't perfect at all, it's just that they don't have room to store things. And yes I'm asian, you are making Japanese all perfect and they have a place for everything and everything in it's place. They are just as human as the rest of the world, it's just that they don't have the room in their apt or house. So that is why they have learned to be more efficient.

The bottled water isn't true. When I was in Japan EVERY house I visited had a HUGE weekly water order, stacked up in a corner or cupboard. I was shocked. I've never seen this in New Zealand, then or since.

When we go to a Japanese general store in Taiwan it is filled with single use gadgets, kitschy decorative items and a myriad of cosmetics. And don't get me started with Muji and Uniglo.
