You mentioned Lewandowski and Haaland as strikers with great scanning, and then said that Xavi developed scanning as a form of self-defense against bigger players. That’s where it all ties together, as scrawny kids, Lewa and Haaland developed awareness as a form of self-defense, just like Xavi.
1. Lewandowski was always a lanky teenager. Even at 20, he was physically weak. Only through relentlessly working on his weaknesses did he gradually build strength and musculature over the years - just like he worked extra on nutrition, stretching, recovery and even pro mindset (Thank You mister Klopp for coaching him in that). Before that, big defenders bullied him easily. If they could catch him.
2. Haaland - hard to believe now - was also small and physically weak as a kid, and even later as a teenager under Ole Gunnar. Defenders could knock him off the ball pretty easily. Growing up, he had to develop ways to avoid contact and escape pressure. Then puberty hit, he took physical training seriously, and suddenly he had the instincts and technique of a scrawny kid combined with the body and athleticism of a video game character.

--
I absolutely love the fact that you include sources and quotes from researchers and professionals. Way too many YouTubers try to pass someone else’s work off as their own thoughts, or just rephrase snippets from interviews.

Like checking a blind spot when driving. At first it's conscious thought.
Do it enough and it becomes sub conscious.

Some time ago I found myself watching Poland - Faroer Islands, and was baffled by the almost complete lack of scanning. Not only by Faroer, but also by the Polish team.

These guys are internationals.

When I would train I was always told to check my shoulder before receiving the ball. If I didn’t I would get told off

My freshmen year in college, our coach spent most of our practices cultivating environments during drills to make this natural for us.

3v3s and 4v4s in a small area where the only goal is to get a consecutive number of uninterrupted passes while only allowing a certain number of touches on the ball. By the end of the season we were only allowed one touch and we had to use that one touch to controll the ball and pass it to a teammate.

Some people could never get the hang of it, others could play without needing looking directly at the ball.
