The Coast Guard codes 14 vessel types and not one is "catamaran." Nobody is counting these losses. Full inspection guide: https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l/bluewater ⛵

I looked at the stats on that 60' cat that capsized. The boom looks like it's at least 25' off the water. Truly a three story condo on water and not seaworthy looking at all.

Your PM Arrival statistic mirrors with the General Aviation, Instrument Arrival Statistic. Arrivals in less than optimal conditions, typically when somewhat fatigued. Fatigue symptoms are close to intoxication hazards.
As such, time of day, introduces Human Factors to your accident equations. Thx for the reporting.

Check the difference in insurance costs for catamarans compared to normal boats.

I think it would be a more interesting thing to know how many monohull yachts have sunk to how many are being used and then compare it to multihulls. Another serious problem is the lack of experience and seamanship. Too many cheque-book captains who think it’s a wonderful idea to go buy a boat and cruise around the world.

Owners and builders still largely do not ask the manufacturers of acrylic (perspex, plexiglass) and polycarbonate (Lexan) glazing about proper installation. These materials are use in architectural glazing and well documented. Silicone is guaranteed to let go after time. Some proprietary sealants with specific primers will bond, and 3M VHB tape bonds just as permanently. But unless room is left for thermal cycling, the glazinv will either craze or pop out. And that can be with adhesives or mechanical bonding--but the instructions are rarely followed.

IIRC "Sandy" was never classed as a hurricane. It was a named storm, officially a "superstorm" because of its size and duration from slow movement.

You start with catamrans sinking and then switch to capsize! What is the number of SUV involved in crashes versus MPV's versus 4x4? Does anybody keeps track?

Most catamarans have sunk due to fire. The most recent was a Sunreef 60 last month in the Adriatic, island of Hvar.

I would think that the insurance companies HAVE THAT INFO. Since they are the ones that have to calculate the risk when issuing a policy. They track every detail of every thing including our health and what we eat and calculate risk of death and disease. So cats over mono hulls is one of their check boxes.

It’s not the vessel, it’s the person handling it.
