BETTER THAN 4K UHD BLU-RAY? Yes, BUT…

The difference of the 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 content is noticeable. Kaleidescape has publicly stated older players an incapable of playing this content because of the SoC used in that generation of hardware.

My hot take is that while the players are insanely expensive for what you get, I actually don’t think they cost enough to make their business viable long term. Data storage probably isn’t an issue because they aren’t exactly storing 1 copy per copy sold, but bandwidth costs of transferring 100GB+ files is gonna add up quick. There’s their equally insanely expensive home servers, but how many are they gonna actually sell vs people who care enough to buy the player for the quality, but are fine keeping a couple of favourite films on hand and just starting a download a couple of hours before they watch or even the night before movie night?

I’m always glad to see more options in the home media space, but after what happened with Sony removing access to hundreds of purchased movies from StudioCanal on PlayStation, I just can’t get behind buying digital content that I can’t actually keep a copy of. Because of that, I’m going all in on 4K Blu-ray. I’m ditching streaming whenever possible and going back to physically owning my media.

Smart move for Kaleidescape as much of their sales are baked into storage space so offering something on paper at least that further helps distinguish their product from discs by increasing the files sizes should be good for them. Curious to see what the real world differences are but I would assume small where people wouldn't notice too much without looking for it but should have some benefits.
4k discs still safe until a time we either get major internet speed changes with more efficient codecs that negates disc vs streaming for Netflix/Apple...etc or there is some new major breakthrough in TV tech that streaming takes advantage of(which will happen at some point as TV manufactures have to sell new TV to stay alive and you can't keep rehashing the current HDR 4K forever)

I have discovered the --> Home-Theater-PC (HTPC)
It allows me to use 10's of different media players AND a backlit Mini-Keyboard. It allows me to EZly change the Brightness and Contrast on the fly to obtain the perfect black level for each Video I play. ALSO

VIDEO CONTROL
Increase or decrease playback speed, Saturation, Hue, Soften, Sharpen, Flip, Screen Rotation, Capture Frame & Segment, Denoise and more...

AUDIO CONTROL
Select Renderer, Voice Removal, Volume, Mute, Speaker Select, Format, Mode...

To sum it up, EVERYTHING!

What TVs support 4:4:4? What cables support 4:4:4? Will 4:4:4 make a difference on my TV (if it works at all) or will I need a better TV to see the difference. I have a Strato E. I was getting tired of discs being damaged in shipping and discs that had playback issues, Strato E solves that problem, I really like digital download delivery! I'm in no rush to upgrade now, maybe in the new home theater space.

The insane cost and closed ecosystem is prohibitive for most people's needs.

I have an R_volution media play for my main movie room for my HDD movies. Top rate video and lossless audio are as good as 4k/Blu-ray Discs....so that's plenty, and gets me 99% of the way there.

I can also watch my movie from my server via the plex app on any to the tv in my house, on my phone, and even share with my adult kids and older parents. Same pic quality and lossless 7.1 audio.

All of this at a fraction of the cost!

It is surprising to me that Apple, NVIDIA, and Roku have not released "Pro" versions of their players to compete with this. It would be pretty trivial for them to add a bit more storage and bump up the processor a little bit on their existing products, and then sell them for $500 extra or whatever.

It's probably only a matter of time before other providers match what Kaleidescape is offering today for movie buffs with very deep pockets. It's definitely a step in the right direction. What about uncompressed sound? Is it true that the audio on an increasing number of 4K Uhd discs has been stunted giving those with a high-end system a subpar experience?

Hey, that's pretty cool about getting a discount on my already owned discs using a disc reader. I did not know that. Not many people mention that. I don't own a Kaleidescape yet, but I just bought the JVC NZ800. With my system, this might be something I would like to jump into. I am just wondering if some of the online boutique sellers have better than MSRP pricing?

Physical media have two advantages. One is audio and video quality, which Kaleidoscope can match or even beat, but the most important advantage of physical media is owning which
Kaleidoscope can't do and not forget about how many people can download 100gb files. Kaleidoscope can be another streaming platform like vudu but can't match discs so i perfer physical media any day.

I can’t find a straight answer on this. What is the source file they are using to encode these films? Do we really think they are being given special treatment by studios or are they just upscaling the same files that are burned to 4k blu rays?
