Max Miller has two German WW2 episodes, one on Sauerkraut soup on submarines, and the other on the home front. The two that are really interesting are the Japanese and Dutch episodes. The former has mock eel skewers made out of sweet potatoes, and the latter has a recipe that uses tulip bulbs.

Sugar had to be rationed because about a third of America’s sugar came from the Philippines, which was invaded and conquered by Japan in the first few months of the war in the Pacific. Coffee had to be rationed because basically everyone in the military drank coffee to stay awake when they needed to.

Max did a couple war-time Germany videos, though the other one outside of this series of videos was on what U-boat crews ate during WWI. Sauerkraut soup.

Regarding the toilet paper: Rumors of a shortage led people to hoard toilet paper, creating empty store shelves despite there not being a major shortage in the first place. Just like in 2020.

History really does repeat itself. 😏

"steak with snails" is a classic french dish.
for that a grilled beef steak, either ribeye or tenderloin, is served with warm garlic butter sauce and whole garden snails, which were pan fried in butter, with garlic, onions and parsley.

18:34 he means after the rations restrictions were loosened, people started to make more babies due to things being fairly easier than before. He didn't mean that the baby boom was during the war and rationing, he meant that after the war it made sense why a lot of people started to have babies.

Fun fact about sugar rationing: It turns out that most of the calories American GIs consumed during the war was from sugar. One day's worth of the most basic rations was like 4000 calories and 240 grams of sugar. So sugar followed by coffee were probably the first things to be rationed cause they were the things most massively diverted to military purposes.

My grandfather was in WW2 and even when the war was over and he was rasing his son, my father, they still rationed food, however my grandfather refused to eat rice, since they were forced to eat Japanese rations of rice which was infested with maggots. Basically he couldn't see rice without seeing maggots. A wild time in history, mainly because how documented it was
