Enjoyed the concepts in the book but the character Cheng Xin kind of ruined the series for me. To trust her once with the fate of mankind was suspect, to trust her a 2nd time after her abject failure was beyond comprehension.

Thank you for your continued coverage of this series. It’s easily one of the best things I’ve ever read. Every time you cover it, I’m reminded of why that is.

My god, imagine leaving for a minute and coming back 1 million years later. This serie is pure brain candy.

Sophon's description of overall structure of the pocket universes started to scratch an itch in my brain. She said that there were multiple great universes and pocket universes all existing on a membrane. Then later they find out that the mass of the universe is "set" incredibly precisely/delicately to just barely allow a big crucn, and deviation from that total mass will result in a big chill/rip, preventing it from restarting.

Those two pieces of info, along with the theme of the "nature" of the universe not being so natural, having been influenced by countless civilizations, across multiple dimensions of space, made me ask: "Why would the dark forest stop at just the edge of the universe?"

If we make the, admittedly, big assumption that the universes could detect other universes, but similar dark forest rules applied, then perhaps the fundamental rules, including the mass limit, could be part of a "safety signal" to prevent dark forest strikes from other universes.

Thought it was a fun idea.

Just one of the many things that I really like this series is how it realistically shows how polluted, abused, and ruined the universe is as a result of the rampant amount of life and civilizations in it.
This series breaks your heart as much as it blows your mind.

Oh yes, Environmentalism has always been a theme in the series, since the very first installment. The Co-founder of the Threebody Organization was a radical environmentalist. Ye Wenjie read the book ‘Silent Spring’ during her time at the Red Bank Base, which was about the apocalyptic environmental disaster caused by insecticide abuse in the US. Different chemicals interact in the natural bodies and created new toxins, the unpredictable results making chemical decontamination extremely difficult.

The advanced civilizations of the Universe are the ones abusing the insecticides. They use horrific and unstoppable, ever-expanding weapons of mass destruction to cull the younger races, who are literally just insects to them. However they themselves cannot cancel out the effects of these weapons, and find themselves under the same threat they put the younger races in. Ironic. Just like how humans got poisoned by chemicals of our own production.

I had read the series but I always had a problem. The physicist in my head was nagging that playing games with things like dimensionality or speed of light has catastrophic consequences to all complex systems as the basic laws are derived from those.
Changing dimensionality reformulates the laws in such a way that prevents any stable systems with more then 1 point particle. (I.e. 4+ dimension space can have only black holes)
Changing the c constant changes the energy levels of all stable systems so that they are no longer stable and must change to a new equilibrium with catastrophic results. For example, reducing c reduces nuclear force range and thus will render atoms like Iron radioactive or even fissile. At best the beta decay stability point should shift like causing say Iron-56 to decay to say Calcium-56 in milliseconds with huge release of energy.
Moreover, the emergence of rest masses and vacuum energy densities are unknown but probably influenced by c so playing a game with c might cause all protons to decay or to change to something else while the new vacuum state might expand uncontrollably in a vacuum collapse wave destroying both the victim and perpetrator of such attack along with the rest of the observable universe.

Some of the scariest Sci-fi stories are the ones with a little "truth" sprinkled within. The expansion of the universe is one of those terrifying ideas that sits in the back of my mind eating away at my sanity...😅😱
