I know you guys have to say that 20 % is 20 %, but you are making 1 basic math mistake. A yacht that has 5 crew, charters for 50.000 euro a week or a yacht with 5 crew that charters for 100.000 a week, and the only reason being that the yacht is newer (which we see a lot here in Greece) would mean the last crew will get double the tip, just because the yacht is newer, but the level of service in the first boat could be much higher.
Same goes for a mega yacht, that has e.g. 20 crew, which charters for 750.000 a week. If we base the 20 % on the 750.000 that would mean a 7500 tip instead of the 2000 for the first boat and again it has nothing to do with the level of service by the crew.

In other words, this American system of fixed tips in percentages is absurd. It is nice that billionaires can afford it, but there is no level of service that turns a 5 euro coffee into a 7500 euro cup of coffee, while that same cup of coffee is now 2000 euro just because it is a different boat. The boat does not determine the level of service, the crew themselves determine the level of service.
Don't forget, the crew still gets a salary for the work they perform on the yacht and those salaries are tax free and each crew member is very well paid for the jobs they do.
As long as the billionaires, and a level just below them, is willing to pay these outrageous tips the show can go on, but since the charter segment is getting more and more into the 24 - 35 mtr range, therefore catering to less wealthy clients, I do see problems arising in the future.

You can save a bit on VAT if the yacht goes offshore. You will have to prove this with GPS and AIS data, but then the VAT can be reduced. I did a deep dive into this topic in preparation of my own Charter company. Here is an extract of what i found: VAT Boundary — the 12 nautical mile EU territorial waters limit
VAT operates on an entirely different boundary: 12 nautical miles from the EU coastline. Inside this line, EU territorial waters apply and full 20% French/Monaco VAT is charged on the charter fee. Outside this line lies international waters, where a proportional VAT reduction may be available — but only if the vessel actually ventures beyond 12nm and the operator can evidence the time spent there.

One question I have is, when a guest is charged for provisions, for example X bottles of champagne, lobster, other food etc. However, the charter guest don’t use it all, and those bottles of champagne are either used by the crew while they get drunk and have fun once the guests have left, and/or use them for the following charter, how is that guest then charged? Surely they don’t discount it? So at the end of the season, they must have so much surplus used by the crew etc that have been billed.

For a lot of the channels viewers, I would expect that they don't really understand who can afford this astronomical cost for a 1 week holiday and what on Earth do they do to make that money ? We would all like to have a week on a superyacht but like most I dream as I buy this weeks EuroMillions lottery ticket for £2.50. To be honest, I'd like my own boat and hire my own crew and I'd make my own beans on toast. Death and Taxes ? Often attributed to Benjamin Franklin but he is not the only one who may have said this ?

Yes of course, the 20% gratuity (more or less) paid for exceptional service, attention to detail and going that extra mile. And that is when the challenges can arrive including, but not limited to, A Captain who then disperses the gratuity based on a level of dodginess that would shock most when there are not clear and transparent guidances, a Captain who fires a crew member right at the end of a charter and then pockets that gratuity himself, a Captain and/or Heads of Departments who play favorites. The only fair way as I understand is for the Charterer to call a crew meeting the night before disembarkation and announces the gratuity personally, one pot of cash spread equally. If I had a dollar for every crew member who felt they were ripped off...........
