My favorite uncle, Harold F Willard, was in the silent service during World War ii. On December 7th, 1941, my uncle and a buddy of his were up on Diamond Head that morning, soaking up the Sun and having a few beers. They saw the entire attack come in and were terrified. They hauled ass down the mountain, but the MPS and civilian police had all the roads closed and were telling people to get in their homes for safety. My uncle didn't get to his boat, which sadly I don't remember the name of, until later that evening and was devastated by the death of destruction that he witnessed. He felt guilty his entire life for not being able to get back to his boat and to Battle Stations, but we know that wouldn't have done anything now. He also had bad ears from the crash dives and depth charge attacks that he went through. Rest in peace, Uncle Harold, you did your job, and you did it well!🇺🇲⚓️🙏💖🍺🇦🇺🖖

I’m smiling at the thought of a Philippine band playing Anxhors Away.  While getting underway from Cubi in 1966, a Philippine band played anchors away as we cast off lines. I was standing on the ladder to PRIFLY on the starboard side of the island. I was deeply moved then and fondly remember that moment. They were a bit off key but played from the heart, which more than made up for it.  It was a very special moment for me.

I just ran into a WWII Navy vet who served on the USS Prebles, destroyer/minesweeper. DM 20. He served in 1943 in SWP and other places there.  His ship was responsible for saving the crew from the USS  PERRY (another mine sweeper) who had hit a mine in support of the invasion of pelileu. This vet is 98 years old.  I graciously thanked him for his service.  It was a real treat to talk to someone who served his county in times of peril!

The Filipinos are a great people not given credit for the fight they fought against their enemies. Bravo The Philippines!

Thank you so much for your podcasts. I discovered them a year ago and have been listening to them while working. I introduced them to my father (who had a series of small strokes recently) while visiting. Having served 27 years in the military (joined at 16 and served as a medic in Korea in 1950 and two tours in Vietnam 1967-1970) he was enamoured with listening with your podcasts. He initially served on the USS Pittsburgh in 1950, attached to a Marine unit in Korea. Listening to these podcasts, he was focused in a way that I had not seen for a long time. As a Christian, thank you Bill Toti, for providing these episodes with your particular insight.

I can't describe how much I enjoy the program.  The details are what make history come alive.

Great episode!  I met Lt. Commander Charles "Chick" Parsons in 1981 while assigned to the US Embassy in Manila with an assignment to cover activities in Mindanao and Sulu.  There's a lot more, as I'm sure you can imagine, to be told about his exploits before, during, and after the war.  The US Embassy Manila's ballroom (where the trial of General Yamashita was held) is named after Charles Parsons.  Two of his sons, who left the Philippines with their parents, remain alive.  One lives in Manila and other in Baguio.

I was thinking about Kelly's Heroes right before Seth mentioned it. I'm sure so many of us grew up watching the same movies and had the same interests.

Shoutout for the USS Grampus, on eternal patrol. Her captain was my mother's cousin, the rockstar of her family. I heard so many stories about him growing up. Found his daughter living in Hawaii from 23&Me.
