It’s wild how Prussia basically chose to be smaller just so they could be more powerful. Most leaders try to grab as much land as possible, but Bismarck knew that including Austria would actually make Germany weaker.

You're putting it very mildly when you say that Bismarck was able to pressure Wilhelm I not to utterly destroy Austria in the wake of the Seven Weeks War,lol

Bismarck actually threatened to jump out of a window if the Kaiser didn't offer Austria lenient peace terms

5:10 Austria was asked if they wanted to be part of the Greater German Path, but declined. Also Bismark would only allow german speaking aparts in the new Empire because he knew it would otherwise destabilize the State like it did to the Austro-Hungerian Empire. So with Austria declining, the solution was the Lesser German Path led by the Hohenzollern.

The border between Scotland and England has been more or less the same for 1000 years unlike the mess that was the Holy Roman Empire and central Europe. Germany is surprisingly a young country compared to say, England, Scotland, France.

By the way, Bismarck was opposed to the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine because he believed that it would fuel a French desire for revenge.

He would be proven right
