The Battle of Clontarf in 1014 effectively ended the Viking age in Ireland, yet the death of Brian Boru led to an immediate collapse of Irish unity. Despite their military defeat, the Norse remained in Dublin for centuries, evolving into the distinct Hiberno-Norse population that shaped Ireland's medieval trade and urban growth. Do you believe the Vikings' long-term survival in Ireland was due to their ability to adapt to Gaelic culture, or was it simply because no Irish king could fully replace Boru's authority?

It would be interesting if the new video about Byzantium and Europe explains the provincial governance system. After all, it was Byzantium that essentially created two systems of self-government for two types of provinces: ducats (duchies) and themes. The duchies of Rome, Naples, and Venice were duchies, while themes were found in Greece and Asia Minor. The difference was significant, as duchies were highly autonomous, and local residents participated in the governance of their region, while themes were governed solely by a military governor.<br>Essentially, duchies had the rudiments of democracy in their governance, while themes lacked this, and their rulers possessed the rudiments of autocracy!
