I Spent $50 on Speakers. Then $5,000. Here's the Truth.

I have a pair of Boston Acoustic bookshelf speakers that I bought new in 2010. I still have them and use them in an extra room and they sound amazing.

When I decided to build a home theater system, I wanted it built around a pair of floor standing speakers. I settled on a level 3 approach and auditioned speakers at a local high-fi dealer. I settled on a pair of quality floor standers in that $1,000 range. I couldn’t be happier, and I know spending more would only deliver marginal improvements.

An important principle of most engineering endeavors is the Pareto Principal which essentially can be boiled down to 80 percent of the result can be obtained with 20 percent of the effort. The remaining 20 percent gain requires an increasingly logarithmic effort. This applies beautifully to what you described

And… room treatment pays far more dividends. One thing worth mentioning is the remarkable improvements in room tuning technology offered by companies like Dirac and Audyssey.

…a pair of $350 dollar bookshelves, and two $650 dollar subwoofers placed in a $1700 dollar treated room will net world class, reference sound rivaling $30,000 dollar
floor-standers, all day long.

Acho a marca britânica Monitor Auduo una ótima opção entre as grandes marcas, mas não vejo o pessoal aqui do YouTube falar dessa marca.

Great post and it certainly drives home what I constantly mention here on YT in regards to those 5 figure and above speakers. The more expensive you go, the less the improvement to sound will be. The Law of Diminishing Returns is a real thing. You get to a point where all you are doing is feeding the trolls and lining their pockets with your hard earned money. I had set my rules straight early on where the changes in sound matter the most. I personally feel you should never pay more than $750 for a set of bookshelf speakers and $1500 for towers. Components should be less than $1000. I know for those that have the money want to shoot their load on these huge, expensive monstrocities, yet they don't invest in a proper room that can support them. Hey, my "grail speaker"would be a pair of Klipschorns, but I know I don't have the room for them. You really need a big room for them since the room is very much an extension of the cabinet, especially with those.

You can't just lump them all together. A really good set of speakers coupled with some excellent electronics and a high degree of understanding how to set them up in an acoustically treated room yields far more than the sum of it's parts. Sure you can take those 50 year old JBL's hooked up to an average amp and then hook up the $5000 pair of speakers and wonder why your whole world isn't lit up with pristine sound like you thought it should be. Just like you can have either a $4000 set of Perilli's on a Corvette or a set of retread snow tires and wonder why your trips to the grocery store doesn't yield the difference in experience you expected. Audiophiles don't spend more money on their sound systems than they do on their car for no reason. And it's also true that they don't have the same priorities that makes a person with a 50 year old set of speakers hooked up to a 50 year old amp and be totally satisfied with the sound.

I realized I had a problem when I started buying recordings from genres I didn’t even like simply because they sounded better. I’m over it now.

What I've learnt over the years is that I prefer a coherent sound where all the drivers sound like one.
Open baffles get close.
Dual concentrics get closer.
Single drivers get closer.

You are not buying a speaker. You are buying an EQ in form of speaker + room. Until you find a pair that sounds right with the music you like. But then it won't sound right with some other music. So - just buy room correction with adjustable curves instead. And be happy having different setups for different music. No more buying a fixed EQ.
