Well, this came up on my feed just in time! I'm painting tree trunks, and have been having a hellish time trying to make them look round. I'm self-taught, so have been searching YT for videos of how to do different things. I don't often paint trees so forward, so it hasn't mattered as much. The timing of this video randomly coming up is most fortuitous! I'm subscribing.

This is very helpful especially if you are only able to paint from a photo .

This is great! I do watercolor and the edges thing is so important with it too. I've just realized that I've been paying attention only to the values & trying to get those right for form vs cast shadows etc (which felt like a huge accomplishment when I finally could do that easily).
I wasn't thinking much about the edge types for value changes & so usually mine are a mess of guesswork. Now I know what I need to focus on to get out this habit. Finally understanding why some things would turn out great & some not even tho I pretty much nailed all the values. Looking over my most frustrating pieces from the last six months, my edges are an illogic mess of hard vs soft that completely confuse the look I was hoping to get. Thank you for this light bulb moment!!

Rules without (understanding the) reasons and rationale (behind them) will inevitably be misused.

Thanks for your clear, practical explanation on this. Really helpful. I was taught to observe edges from lesson one in 1993, but without comprehending why they are so.

My little adage above, inspired by your video, especially applies to composition. People start to judge a work through the lens of the, usually, very few composition rules they know... ("Artistic conventions') Instead of letting the work hit their soul unimpeded. Because then you can analyse why it works or doesn't work. Here you can use the rules or discover new possibilities. Doing it this way continues to grow my repertoire of thinking around composition.

It is a good goal to paint exactly what I am seeing without the clumsy mistakes of what I am thinking I am seeing. For me I am trying to bring the viewer into the painting and control the narrative. That means that I am trying to control their interpretation. I can't do that by creating a photo realistic image.

The best explanation ever heard, GREAT!
But just go a step further, there are other two things that matter more.
DISTANCE to the viewer and ORIENTATION of the surface to the line of sight between the eye and the surface itself. (Normal of the surface).
This is more general than the rule you mentioned which applies when we have shadows and light.
But if we have a cloudy day without shadows, your rule does not apply, it remains DISTANCE and ORIENTATION OF THE SURFACE.
I spent twenty years to get to this knowledge...
CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN, GO ON, GO ON you are on the right way❤

THANK YOU! I thought I understood this... AND I could tell from my work that I did not. Your approach has helped me get a deeper more real world view of how to use edges. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
