What was life actually like at every rank in the German Army during World War II? You begin at the bottom. A 19-year-old Schütze named Karl Weber leaves his family in Cologne and enters the war carrying a Kar98k rifle, an M35 steel helmet, and almost no authority. Then every level changes the war. At the lowest rank, war is one window firing at you. At the middle ranks, it becomes deciding which friends and soldiers have to move first. At the highest ranks, those same people become numbers on a strength report. The story follows the German Army from Poland and France through Operation Barbarossa, the Eastern Front, Italy, Normandy, Operation Cobra, the Ardennes Offensive, the Vistula-Oder Offensive and the final collapse of Germany in 1945. Along the way, you'll see how weapons, pay, command responsibility, logistics, fuel shortages, replacement problems and battlefield decisions changed as rank increased. The video also addresses the German Army's role in the criminal war of conquest and racial annihilation in the East, including cooperation with Nazi killing policies, criminal military orders and the catastrophic treatment of Soviet prisoners of war. By the final level, a Field Marshal looks down at a report and sees one number: 312 effective. To him, it is simply the remaining strength of a regiment.
