I know this may sound weird. But I sometimes go to my local small or big box hardware store and pick up a few paint color swatches to get ideas about gradient color and/or mix and match color looks.

I’m not sure you’ll ever see this comment so late, but I’m the artist who made the H+H entrance installation. Just wanted to say it was a huge thrill to see my work pop up in your video! I hoped the piece would make all the attendees feel exactly how you look in that picture!! 🦋✨✨

This is a tip for contrast from the quilting community: looking at your colour palette through a green or red transparent plastic (that often comes with colour wheels). If there’s no contrast in your colour palette, you will see it right away ❤

Hey Elise!!! This is a fantastic video! Choosing colors when making a project is one of the most important things you can do. I do have a couple of tips to help anyone that needs inspiration on colors, or just a little bit of help to get the right color palette.<br><br>1. Take a GOOD look at nature! Nature doesn't get it wrong. Think of a field of wildflowers, a spectacular sunset, a natural beach, a forest in fall. These natural color palettes will ALWAYS look beautiful together.<br><br>2. Mix and Match. Sometimes the color itself is not enough. You also need to look at the HUES. Bold and Bright, Neutrals, and Muted colors. Pick colors that go together but think about one or two bright and bold colors, a muted color and a neutral. This is something to think about if you want your project to have a pop of color, but you don't want it to be a blinding contrast.<br><br>3. Monochromatic, of sorts. Sometimes the best color palette is the same color, just different hues. This goes back to the value of color. Stay in the same color, but pick a light, mid-range and dark hue of the same color. <br><br>4. Variegated/Ombre yarns. Believe it or not, this is one of the best way to choose colors for your project! You don't necessarily have to pick that variegated or ombre yarn but look at the those that have colorways that you like/love. Then just pick the solid color yarns that match the colors in that variegated/ombre yarn you like.<br><br>5. Understand the look you are going for. Sometimes the ONLY thing wrong with your color palette, is that it doesn't provide the look you were going for. If that's the case, no matter how beautiful the project is, it's just NOT going to look right to you. So think about the look you want. <br><br>6. It's not just the color you choose, it's WHERE you place it. You can pick 'ugly'/clashing colors and STILL come up with something beautiful! You can also pick 'pretty'/complimentary colors and come up with something that doesn't really work. The reason is usually the way or the order you put those colors together. So, play around with the colors: line them up, side by side, move them around, until you find a color order that works for you.<br><br>7. Doesn't hurt to get a second opinion! Sometimes you can have your heart set on a specific set of colors, that you can't make an objective decision. It's like you can't see the forest for the trees. So don't be afraid to ask someone 'what do you think of these colors together?' Just make sure you understand what kind of look you want, so you can give that information to the person your asking. If you want something soft and cozy, but you don't mention that, then your second opinion won't have enough information to be objective.<br><br>8. Take inspiration from the Professionals! Elise mentioned quilters, but there is another great way to help you choose color combinations. Printed Fabric! Take a look at your favorite print dress/skirt/blouse, comforter, whatever. These color palettes are right in front of you, so pick one that matches the look you want, and your color choices are right there for you!<br><br>I hope these tips help someone! Happy Crafting Everyone!

One of my WIPs is inspired by a skein of variegated yarn I picked up at the thrift store. The colorway was so stunning, but is also discontinued. So I searched for solid yarn colors that matched as closely as possible, and now I know the blanket will be stunning once I am finished.

I had some granny squares that I was going to make into a jacket but changed my mind as I didn’t think they’d work together. I decided to join them and make into what I was going to call my ugly blanket. I went around each with the same colour and when I finished it I was amazed how it all came together. It’s now my favourite blanket ☺️

I'm a quilter and often get yarn inspiration from fabric. If you pick up a floral or print fabric and love the color mix, buy a half yard and go to the yarn section and match it. You can sew a pillow to match your afghan when you are done.

I am a nail technician, so, I deal with color all the time, but what tends to help a ton of people is a very in depth color wheel screenshot on your phone… it’s nice to have.

Art 101, love it! Visual artist here! Incorporating the 'art elements' and 'design principles' are needed for everything; from home decorating, to fashion, to designing architecture, gardens/parks, even the food we eat. So, why would crochet/knitting be any different. Yay, Elise, for bringing awareness to it! Great tips!

Now that JoAnn’s is gone, one mistake that I won’t repeat is buying yarn online. The color on your screen turns out to be duller than what you see. So unless it’s a kit, and even those colors on the video and on your viewing tv or phone, can be saturated or darker in reality!!!

one hack for choosing colors is this. Choose a variegated yarn and then get yarn in similar colors that you see there. It really helped me learn color combos
