This documentary retraces, in ten chapters, the journey of Alexandre Grothendieck, from Berlin to Ariège. You will discover the childhood of a boy born to two anarchist activists, left at the age of five with a German foster family while his parents went to fight in Spain. The war years in France, the Rieucros internment camp in Lozère, the disappearance of his father at Auschwitz, then the refuge of Chambon-sur-Lignon, the village in Haute-Loire that saved hundreds of Jewish children and where the teenager discovered geometry as one discovers a free country. You will then follow the rise of an extraordinary self-taught man: the solitary years in Montpellier, where he unknowingly reconstructed measure theory and the Lebesgue integral; his arrival in Paris at Henri Cartan's seminar; the fourteen open problems that Laurent Schwartz and Jean Dieudonné posed to him in Nancy, which he solved on his own in a few months; the thesis on topological tensor products and nuclear spaces, which made him, at the age of twenty-five, the world's leading specialist in his field. The film devotes considerable space to the pivotal years of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette, this scientific sanctuary founded by Léon Motchane where Grothendieck worked twelve hours a day for over a decade. We explain, in accessible and straightforward language, the ideas that revolutionized algebraic geometry: the notion of a scheme, which reconciles the study of figures with that of integers; étale cohomology; Weil's conjectures and the role played by his student Pierre Deligne. We also recount the Fields Medal of 1966, the prize he allowed to be awarded to someone else rather than going to Moscow, and his time in Hanoi during the bombings. The second part of the narrative sheds light on a turning point that still divides historians of science: the discovery of military funding in his institute's budget, his resignation in 1970, the founding of the environmental and pacifist movement Survivre et Vivre (Survive and Live) with Claude Chevalley and Pierre Samuel, life without electricity in a hamlet in the Hérault region, the thousands of pages written in silence, the autobiographical manuscript Récoltes et Semailles (Harvests and Sowings), the refusal of the Crafoord Prize, and finally, his voluntary withdrawal from public life in Ariège until his death in 2014. We approach the controversial aspects of his life with the nuance they demand, presenting the different interpretations offered by biographers rather than a single version. His final years, marked by spiritual concerns and a desire to prevent the publication of his work, are treated with respect and caution.
