  Oh heavens, I&apos;m supposed to be doing maths this morning, but I&apos;ve just discovered this incredible interview and CAN&apos;T STOP WATCHING. How compelling to hear someone who is such an expert on Grothendieck talk so engagingly about his mathematics AND his life. I&apos;m a 60-year old who has just begun doing maths after never having been able to do it before. It&apos;s these kinds of videos that keep me going. Thank you Curt, thank you Colin!

  If you can invite Colin McLarty back for a second podcast episode, I would suggest the general topic of the episode to be something like &quot;Colin McLarty&apos;s &nbsp;guide to studying X&quot; where X is some math (sub)field. It could be many different sub-fields. I like the approach of telling the history of a field while learning it. For certain fields (topos theory, category theory, etc.), Colin can probably tell its history (i.e. what are the problems that eventually gave rise to that field and who are the mathematics working on it) and suggest good literature about the field itself and its history.

  As a student in algebraic number theory 35 years ago, I read many of Serre&apos;s books (starting with &quot;A Course in Arithmetics&quot;) and also went to his lectures and talks at Collège de France and Séminaire Bourbaki. What Pr. McLarty says about Serre in a few sentences at the beginning of the interview is, in retrospective, spot on.<br>(BTW: Serre became in 1954 the youngest winner of the Fields Medal, at 27, and he still retains this distinction. He is 98 now, and still publishes mathematical papers, the latest in 2023).

  For anyone interested in Grothendieck, I recommend Benjamin&apos;s Labatut&apos;s &quot;nonfiction novel&quot; When We Cease to Understand the World. He vividly portrays Grothendieck&apos;s idiosyncratic genius and profound moral impulse.

  Prof. Colin McLarty has a vast knowledge of history, both concerning mathematics and others. I would love to see him writing books of history of mathematics.
