Our First Christmas in a French Château—and It Snowed!

Only a few weeks after moving our family into the château, Christmas was coming, and so were five members of our family. Before everyone arrived, we needed to hang lights and mirrors in two-foot-thick stone walls, install a new mailbox, assemble some much-needed kitchen furniture, prepare the guest rooms, and devise a temporary solution for a bathroom we definitely weren’t ready to renovate. Then came the delivery of our enormous American-sized refrigerator, which could only enter the château by being hoisted over the balcony. Eventually, reinforcements arrived. We gathered Christmas greenery from the forest, rang the bell in our little chapel, filled the house with family, music, raclette and far too many sweet treats, and woke on Christmas morning to find the entire château covered in snow. This is our very first Christmas at the château.
