Think I'd mount the reader on a 30degree angle to mount it at an easy see position over flat to the tail stock . The collar mount Wong make a dkfference.

Rather than moving the clamp on the quill so that you don’t accidentally eject it, you could print a spacer on your 3D printer that you can snap on and off easily. It would make it easy to eject when you want to and prevent you from ejecting it when you don’t.

One thing I wouldn't do, is use the word 'cheap"

I also have a Precision Mathews lathe though it is smaller than yours, 12-28. I have had a tailstock dro sitting here for a couple of months now debating how I want to attach it. Unlike yours on mine the quill needs to recess into the tailstock 2.5mm to release the taper so I will need to mount it to the front face of the quill rather than around the quill. After watching your video I think rather than having it lay flat on the top of the tailstock I would like to mount it angled towards me and mount it on the top front corner. I am going to draw something up and 3d print it before I machine it out of aluminum. Thanks for some ideas.
