Joseph George Fagan was a Bombay Lancer stationed in India. He married Louisa Matilda Ballard in 1872. Willaim Ballard was Louisa's older brother. Noteworthy is the fact than Louisa Fagan came in second to Mary Rudge in the 1887 First International Women's Chess Championship.
