I had a reborn doll my parents gave me to play with as a toddler. I find out 20 yrs later it's a replica of my dead older sister that NOBODY in my immediate family has talked about to this day.

I got my 92 year old grandma with dementia/Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s a baby doll. It was not a reborn but a slightly realistic baby doll. She loves it. It helps her with taking care of the baby. She loves to just hold her and talk to her.

Anyway, on a real note these dolls do help people with disabilities too. I used to work with a woman whose daughter will never mentally mature past 10 years old and she loves babies. She is in her 20’s now and knows she can’t have kids and she has a few of these dolls ranging from newborn to toddler and she takes them out in strollers. It’s both sad and sweet.

As someone who is a doll collector most of these crazy people are doing everything for hate clicks and views most collectors don’t treat them like they are actual babies reborns are an art piece and part of a doll collection

I think the weirdest part isn’t even the dolls, it’s the fake pregnancy???

It weirds me out when people with real young kids in the house have the reborn dolls and treat them like another child. Not just the trauma of the weird lifeless sibling at the table next to you but also wondering why you weren't good enough

I worked with a dementia patient who had a couple of dolls she took everywhere with her and had to tuck in before going to bed herself. Her husband was at the same facility and he would visit her at bed time (each room was a single room so they lived separately) and help her kiss the babies good night. They weren't this realistic. They don't have to be if the dementia is bad enough, honestly. But it really does help. If their mind is stuck in a time when they were a mother and their kids were little then getting them a doll helps to give them purpose and helps with the confusion.

Reborn doll artist here.... I'd say 80% of the dolls I make are for collectors...., and the other 20% is for therapeutic purposes.
Although I do gift a lot of my dolls to seniors with Alzheimer's or other memory issues,
OPEN TO ANY QUESTIONS 🥰

I have worked in nursing homes. You have no idea how many of our patients with Dementia have been helped by these dolls. Back in the day patients would pretend a stuffed animal was their baby. These dolls were the perfect substitute for them. I've seen them bring a lot of joy to our residents. Especially the ones whose families never visit.

I’m 19 and have multiple. They really help me with my depression, anxiety, and OCD. I enjoy dressing them and brining them places, and sometimes I pretend to feed them. This being said, I think it’s alright for people to just collect them without needing the therapy aspect, too. I also had no idea there were so many odd TikTok’s. Most reborn “parents” don’t really role play with them, either. At least not often. You’re actually only supposed to dress them up to once a week as continuous dressing and undressing can damage the paint! They’re true works of art, and must be treated as such.

so i have some experience with people with dementia, they won’t feel weird about it feeling like a deceased baby if the illness has progressed far enough. they won’t notice it not moving and often times they will even note the baby smiling or talking to them because confusion is such a big part of the illness. the babies are a really good tool to allow loved ones to safely interact with babies as their behavior due to the dementia can be unpredictable. i know of families that get these dolls to “introduce” their family member to a new baby but in a safe way.
