Americans lived that way before the 1970s. Large massive consumerism started to influence lifestyles after that.

I once visited a French girl.
She asked me if I wanted to go to the park ? I said sure.
We sat with her friends from
8am till 9pm and just talked.
I was shocked.

(French old timer here) In the fifties, my grand parents had a nice oldish house in a village near Dourdan, south west of Paris. The café owner was an old flemish woman named De Maesner. On sundays, she prepared traditional dishes "to go". A marvelous smell of "Coq au vin", "civet de lièvre", "canard à l’orange" or "bœuf bourguignon" made everybody hungry in the church during the mass... She did not need more advertising.

Hi, Love your story. This is how I live in the U. S. Many friends are impressed by my life. I cook at home, buy in thrift shops, make my own bread, and exercise so I'm in great health with no problems at 82 years old.

Contentment, and being grateful for what you have got, is a good starting place.

2000€ is a decent wage in France. Lived 4 years on a sailboat in the harbour of Ouistreham with 500€ a month, having asbsolutly nothing exept my boat and a bike, always wearing the same clothes and it was one of the best time of my life.

I’m American and I’m also Vegan. I don’t drink, smoke or over consume. I love to journal and draw and I love my cat and the hummingbirds who visit my feeder. This country has MANY problems, but there are really loving people here who want to do right for the environment, our own species and other species. We are also charitable. Spread kindness, it’s the only way to combat all the negativity✌🏽❤️

I live this way in America. I stay away from medications and doctors. I've taught my children to live simply, like this, and we enjoy thrifting, gardening, and making meals at home. We stay away from bread, pasta, rice dishes, and any kind of starch which is sad, but our starches have been poisoned by Big Food production.

I am in LA, the land of excess. I live more like Europeans than Americans. Both my parents were born in Europe, hence some built-in frugality. My dad could repair almost anything, and if he couldn't, we went to a proper repair shop. My lifestyle is not suitable for many others. My only difference is that I do have a healthy stockpile of food that gets rotated every 6 months. I live in earthquake country and have had no services for a week at a time. So cars topped off when needed and have enough food, medicine and water for myself and 14 animals.

I guess you're right about Americans eating out often. I am American and cook dinner at home for my family every night. We go out at holidays or as a special occasion. This is how we can be healthy and afford a beautiful home life. I'm glad my children are healthy and well adjusted because of this. It's how I was raised.
