I went to many of these Pro Wrestling USA shows in NJ in the 80's. Short lived, but a dream come true for wrestling fans.

In my opinion, Pro Wrestling USA was a great idea, as it meant so much top talent would be able to wrestle each other on PPV. It is too bad that egos got in the way.

When I became a wrestling fan, in the spring of '85, Pro Wrestling USA was doing its thing. The WWF and Pro Wrestling USA were my introduction to wrestling. So, for that reason alone, Pro Wrestling USA has a very, very special place in my heart.

I grew up toward the end of the territory days. I started watching wrestling in the late 70s when my father and his best friend took me to an NWA match at Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio. I saw Tommy wild fire Ridge fight Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer. That was a fantastic match and it turned me on the Wrestling . I had to watch it every Saturday. Where I lived at in Ohio was I could pick up channels from Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati. So I got to watch the NWA/JCP from Cincinnati and the WWF from Dayton in Columbus. I thought I was getting the best of both worlds at the time. I wish the partnership between the AWA/NWA would’ve lasted because if you look at the talent on that card, it was second to none. I saw a lot of live events at Harra Arena mainly WWF once we got into the early 80s and I saw one NWA show at Riverfront Stadium, which was a part of The Great American Bash ‘86. Seeing Ric Flair landing in a helicopter from the channel WCPO of Cincinnati land inside the stadium and the red carpet rolled out for him with something I have never seen before and it was awesome to see him come out of that copter. He wrestled Road Warrior Hawk, in the main event in a cage. We also got to see another cage match, which was the midnight express with Jim Cornett versus Dusty Rhodes. Magnum TA, and Baby Doll. I really like that match because shortly after that is when he was in his career ending car wreck, which was a tragedy. I’ll never forget going to see that show for many reasons. I begged my parents to take me to see the show and they absolutely said no, and I kept pressuring them until my mother said to me “you can go and I’ll pay for the ticket if you can find somebody that will take you. “I guess I wore her down for her to say that. She knew that nobody would drive 80 miles to watch wrestling. So I called my Great Aunt Helen, the patriarch of the family. She was the glue that held everything together. She was a great woman and I loved her dearly. So after my mom told me that I called my aunt Helen and told her what my mom said and she told me she would be more than happy to take me in a friend down there to see it. And she told me to put my mom on the phone. So I walked to my mom and smiled and said aunt Helen wants to talk to you. My mom gave me a dirty look and got on the phone and all I heard was “no he doesn’t need to go, no, no, well, well, I guess so, yes ma’am, yes ma’am, I love you. My mom hung up the phone and said I can’t believe you called her. I guess you’re going. I went because my aunt Helen basically told my mom I was going with her And nobody dared to contradict my aunt Helen. And I got to spend the entire day with my aunt Helen, which I cherished forever because shortly after that, she was at home, running the vacuum cleaner and had a massive heart attack and died. None of us were aware of her condition and I don’t think she was either. So this event is special to me because right before she passed. I got to spend the whole day with her as a kid. When I got the news she passed along I was absolutely devastated. It was probably the first time I ever cried because I loved one had passed, and it affected me so much because I loved her a lot.

PW USA came to the New Haven (CT) Coliseum which was a WWF(E) stronghold in '85. One of the matches on the card was The "New" Samoans with Oliver Humperdink vs The Youngbloods. The Samoans had just left the WWF(E) as babyfaces at that time as well as the short lived Humperdink being Bam Bam Bigelows manager. On this card, the "New" Samoans were heels while the Youngbloods were obvious faces but the crowd, knowing the Samoans, gave them a huge pop. Same thing happened in Ridgewood Grove Queens, NY that the Samoans were getting a bigtime pop from the crowd & Von Rashke/Blackwell got the heat.

Thanks for this. PW USA is like a fever dream for me because as a child I started watching wrestling the summer of 1985. The magazines were always months behind so they’d have pictures of these shows and it seemed like this cool super promotion that I was so excited to see(not knowing it was dying or dead by the time I heard about it)

I watched AWA, USWA and the Louisville based ICW in the early '80's. Fond memories indeed!

Growing up in WWF territory, seeing any of this was nearly impossible. I remember getting to see the AWA stuff on ESPN (briefly) when my cable company finally got it, but it was years before I could really watch any NWA programming.

I used to watch on PIX channel 11 and went to all of the Meadowlands events. I could never understand how they had such an awesome roster but it wasn't that good. We didn't know about booking, angles, egos, etc. You'd think it was because we were accustomed to the WWF style, but when the NWA ran heir shows at The Meadowlands, going back to '84, they were always great.
