What started as a shared love of fish has grown into an incredible rescue operation dedicated to giving unwanted and oversized aquarium fish a bigger home. Ohio Fish Rescue provides a safe place for fish and other aquatic animals whose owners can no longer care for them, either providing them with a permanent home at the rescue or working to place them with responsible new owners. Their mission goes beyond simply rescuing fish. Ohio Fish Rescue also works to educate aquarists about the adult size and long-term needs of the animals they purchase. By providing an alternative for unwanted fish, the organization also helps prevent aquarium species from being released into local waterways, where non-native species can potentially harm native ecosystems. In this Fish Room Tour, we join Big Rich for a look around an aquarium facility unlike anything we have featured before. Massive aquariums and ponds house an incredible variety of freshwater species, including some truly enormous fish that demonstrate just how important it is to understand what you're bringing home before buying it. We also take a look at one of the most fascinating parts of Ohio Fish Rescue—their freshwater stingrays. These remarkable fish are livebearers, giving birth to fully developed live young rather than laying eggs. Ohio Fish Rescue successfully breeds freshwater stingrays and makes captive-bred rays available for sale, helping generate support for the enormous undertaking of caring for the rescue's residents.
