(21.5 - 16.75) / 16.75 = 28.36% difference in the strength of the two knots. That's not a small difference. However, in order to thoroughly compare the two knots, you would have to run quite a few more trials...particularly due to the fact that it nearly impossible to tie the very same knot with absolute consistency. We leave that to the machines/robots. PS) I use the very same Tie Fast Knot Tying tool that you used for your knot, and I tie it exactly the same way. I'm 100% a freshwater fisherman, but your advice about saltwater use is spot on. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video! I've often thought the same thing (same finished product, different technique to get there) but this did a nice job at proving it.

Two quick thoughts:
1. Either knot gets stronger (although harder to fully seat properly) with more wraps. Without good pliers (on both ends) I struggle to properly seat more than 10 or so turns. The fly line often gets an 'S' shape with more turns which creates more friction.
2. I haven't tested the way you did, but I suspect that hitting either knot with a bit of UV resin would strengthen it slightly. It definitely can make the knot go through the guides easier. Done carefully, it'll also prevent your fly line core from soaking up water (less of an issue on most tropical lines than cold water lines).

If you have the tool, the nail knot approach is probably faster. That said, I once tied a snell using the ear piece of some Ray Ban Aviators when a loop broke out on the water and without a nail knot tool or a bodkin. Knowing both has its place.....

I have for years used micro loops to join line and no issues with turn over

I’ve tried Flips method, watched his video many times and have come to the same conclusion as yourself, it’s a nail tied in a very convoluted way.

That's why the needle nail knot adds a degree of safety

Threat the mono through the core of the fly line using a needle. Go about 2 inches and poke it out the side of the fly line. Then tie a uni kno clamping down on the part of the fly line with the mono inside the core. 2 dabs of UV resin to seal. The flyline will break before the knot does

Have to agree, I came on looking for an explanation because I felt the same, obviously a snell differs when on a hook, but outside of that I see it as a nail knot. Thanks for the clip !

2 things , 1 is that you are basing your breaking pointon both on the line to ine s , I think you will find that for tarpon or other big fish work the mono would would be thicker giving a different criteria to measure the reaking strength of the knot , 2 neither of those knots are actually nail knots as far as I am aware as a true nail knot I believe has the mono exiting the fly line through the centre at what would be the core , giving a totally central pull point , that is how we used to tie them when I worked in the trade in the eighties , the snell knot was originally used as far as I am aware for tying non eyed hooks , as in salmon irons as they were called . I stand to be corrected but that is what I was taught and still use today .something to chew over anyway , lol .
