Massive respect for titling the video $150 and your average viewer being able to achieve this.

Anyone concidering building their own server: Check with local schools and universities. Likely they have old computers lying around you can get for next to nothing or even free.

built a server over the summer with this kinda goal in mind, I was able to get an hp elitedesk 800 g3 sff with an i5-7500, 8gb ddr4 and 256gb nvme for $75, and I bought 2x6TB refurb drives on amazon for $50 each. You can take out the optical drive and fit the 2 3.5inch drives with this, one of the smallest office cases that support this OTB

For anyone else trying to build a NAS in old prebuilt case and don't want to drill hard drive mounting holes, you can buy PCI slot brackets that hold 3.5" and 2.5" drives, assuming you're not planning to put too many GPUs and HBAs in your server.

I’m really enjoying the “buy older hardware for cheap and figure out ways to use it in 2025”. Earlier this month, I picked up a 2013 Mac Pro from eBay for $100. I picked up a used 8-core xeon for $11 and 64 GB of RAM (used, but from a reputable seller) for another $23. It’s only got 512 GB of storage, but I have a 1.5TB spinning drive and a 4TB SSD hanging off a 2014 Mac Mini I picked up for ~$40 a few years ago. The Mini is my server and it’s capable enough of running Jellyfin, Crafty, Time Machine server and Tailscale as well as some other Mac Backup software for my photos. The most expensive part of this setup was the 4TB SSD. Both of the Macs are running Sonoma via Open Core patcher and function great for everything I do.

Macs may be frowned upon here, idk, but as a recent subscriber, I think it’s totally within the spirit of the channel. As much as I’d like a maxed out M5 MacBook Pro, this setup really works for me.

Moving is hell and $150 is a really difficult budget. Somehow, you made it work but there are few who could.
