The hostler has a walker to take the horse around the paddock until it cools off, with a warm blanket. That horse was only travelled 10 miles, hauling a heavy wagon at a walk, maybe 20 if only a light human. The main reason for the spacing between inns - horses are not endurance animals. The horse is then rubbed down. It can’t be given cold food or water immediately. It ideally has to rest a day, and pastures the rest day. A walking horse goes twice as fast as a human, so that’s a huge help travelling. The horses are owned & exchanged at the lodges. Not the travellers
