For any one interested in a discussion about bad mechanics in good games that I had with Jacob Geller, Eurothug4000, and Iron Pineapple, you can watch it exclusively on Nebula: https://nebula.tv/videos/razbuten-the-worst-mechanics-in-good-games-feat-jacob-geller-eurothug4000-and-iron-pineapple

True story! I nearly died while playing Bionic Commando (2009)!
I was 15 years old, alone in my basement eating tortilla chips and one got lodged SIDEWAYS in my throat. I couldn't breath, was seeing spots in my vision, and the water I tried to soften it/wash it down with was backing up into my mouth.. I had to crush my own windpipe to break the chip within.
I was crying, coughing, throat in immense pain. I then unpaused my game and went on with my day.

Shadwen is actually my favorite stealth game purely because the rewind feature removed the frustration of dodgy, ambiguous stealth mechanics. Not a great game by any metric, but unique.

Love the final reflection. "Making X but good" is a great mindset for devs, just as valuable as "making a game as good as X"

Years ago I played a game called Neverdead. It wasn't very good, but had an interesting mechanic: your character could be damaged and have body parts fall off, at times even leading to you just being a head rolling around. I remember thinking there was so much missed potential for what could be done with these mechanics, especially in terms of puzzles. I'd forgotten the game even existed until years later I played The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories and while not perfect it was exactly what I'd imagined Neverdead could've been. It's nice when that feeling of "this mechanic could've been great if it were in a better game" is vindicated.

Red Faction immediately comes to mind. Destructible environments felt like they had such huge potential and yet the story mode only made use of it a couple of times. It felt like they ignored the mechanic that made the game special.

All I want is a well made story-based Iron Man game, set up similar to the modern Spider-Man games but with the anthem flying and melee mechanics. I would spend stupid money on that

Bionic Commando feels like 1 really talented dev made the controls in a playground experimental stage... then that got handed off to a workshop that turned it into a full releasable game as artlrlessly as possible.

The Conclusion of 'I wish Devs took great mechanics from bad game' feels similar to the hollywood remake problem. The financial pressures push remakes to be about what as been successful again and again, but a more interesting and artful direction would be to remake the movies with great ideas but otherwise didn't hit the mark. Some movies have the wrong writer, director, or actor(s); some don't get the budget they need or have to deal with studio meddling, or maybe the technology wasn't there at the time. Dozens of movies across practically every genre are in a prime position for a remake, but instead we get safe remakes, soft reboots, and legacy sequels.
