Abrams wore out his Thunderbolts but never had one shot out underneath him.<br><br>During World War II, the legendary commander of the 37th Tank Battalion wore out six (possibly seven) different M4 Sherman tanks—all sequentially named Thunderbolt (from Thunderbolt I through Thunderbolt VII). However, every single one of those tanks was retired due to mechanical wear and tear from aggressive, front-line operations, rather than enemy fire.
