I can’t believe I didn’t happen across this post sooner! I’m just beginning to take on some vintage stereo gear for repair and haven’t seen a good hobbyist video like this till today! This is exactly what I needed. I have a high school level electronics education and some experience as a DI Wire, but got really excited to see this! Thanks!

Awesome videos. I wanted to thank you. I have tinkered with electronics since the 80's. No formal training, just old school trial and error. You have really filled in some of the gaps in my knowledge. Thank you and PLEASE keep it up. Will you ever consider doing some early to late 80's components?

I started repairing audio equipment when I was 18-years old at a service center in in California, and they showed me how to use a "dim-bulb" tester when replacing output transistors in amplifiers. Many years later, still repairing all kinds of electronic equipment including restoring analog instrumented (metered) Variac's. There is nothing better than a dual analog metered (meaning with indicating needles) Variac when slowly bringing up the ac voltage to a newly repaired piece of electronic equipment that is AC powered! The dim-bulb tester will work, but even with two DVM's, it doesn't let you determine because of the constantly changing digital meters, what the "device under test" is actually drawing as the voltage is raised. The analog meter needles clearly demonstrate through "visual comparative perception" what the voltage and current the DUI is drawing as the voltage is raised to the device, this is called "trending", constantly and visually monitoring both the voltage and current to determine the status of the DUI under test! There are these cheaper Flukes that have auto dectect for AC/DC. One can find ac in a DC circuit without trying. This feature has saved me a lot of time troubleshooting industrial equipment. I am a Service technician repairing automated food processing equipment and have been an electronics hobbyist my whole life. I like to say that I came out of womb with a soldering iron in my hand. 😂

Thanks for the list! Consider the FNRSI Upgraded 2in1 DSO-510 Oscilloscope with 10X Probe: Digital Portable Oscilloscope/DDS Signal Generator Automotive 2.8 inch TFT, 10MHz Bandwidth, 48MS/s Sampling Rate, Auto Trigger Function and these are less than $50!! Incredible.

I basically used every one of these in the seventies during 3 years of electronics. The 1st year was dedicated to vacuum tubes. The last 2 solid state. Fun times.

I work on a lot of cassette decks and one set of cheap tools that have been lifesavers are those little orange handle picks from HF. They come in sets of four and I think they’re like $3… good for fishing belts through gaps and spaces.

Thank you Aidan, these tools 🔧 you showed will come in handy for my workshop in electronics. I'm familiar with Xuron 🔧 tools. I sold them when I was working in a hobby shop in New York City. I have one as I'm also a model Railroad my other mainline hobby. Thanks for this presentation. 👍✅️

I would also recommend a Variac (variable voltage transformer) and an Isolation Transformer so you don't electrocute yourself (the Oscilloscope is grounded so you can create a ground loop when testing).
