To all of you guys who are planning a tonsillectomy. If you have issues with your tonsils at the moment with disgusting stones and bad smell or if the tonsils are sick or infected or enlarged etc…. Just get them removed and you will save your problem once and forever. Getting a tonsillectomy was one of the best decisions of my life. There were rumours that this is an important organ etc… Bullshit! Other rumours saying that once you remove the tonsils the chance of getting a sore throat or infections with flu is higher. Again bullshit. It’s the other way around.
My life is amazing after 10 years of living without them and I get to have a sore throat much less often.

The only hard thing is the recovery. It takes full 9 days to recover. The hardest are the third, fourth, 5’th days….Having a feeling that your throat is cut open everytime you swallow even your spit.

I had my surgery with only local anaesthesia. No pain during it.

Overall- highly recommend

I was that 1 patient who bled an insane amount at home the next day. I woke up choking on my blood (I apologize for the graphic image). I was 26 at the time. My roommate drove me to the Emergency Room and there was just so much blood gushing out of my mouth. I asked the nurse at the hospital to fetch me a priest to come and pray with me because I genuinely thought I would die. Then the anesthesiologist came in and he held my hand and said (with a very thick Russian accent): "Son, you're going to be just fine. Just breathe and try to imagine your Mom is holding you" (I had been asking for my Mom who lived in a different country at the time). He was so sweet and thoughtful. He got me relaxed and kept holding my hand as they wheeled me in the operating room. The recovery was beyond painful. But I'm SO HAPPY I did the surgery, despite the nightmare I endured. I was getting Strep Throat every other week and was genuinely and physically sick from antibiotics. The surgeon told me than less than 1% of patients experience the kind of bleeding I had. Oh well. At least it's behind me now :D

I’m 57 and had mine out 10 days ago. I can’t believe how painful this operation has been. My ENT Dr did warn me, but I honestly had no idea what I was in for. I ate better on day 1 and 2 than I can right now. You can’t help but loose weight. I ate toast right from day 1 like I was advised to by the Dr. All was well and then it just hits you! Ouchy!! Pain meds and water. I drank a herbal honey and ginger tea from Costco. It honestly has been a life saver for me. I know it will get better and better everyday. You just need to ride the highs and lows. I also had a septoplasy revision done at the same time. Hang in there everyone going through your recovery. Life will soon get back to normality for us all.

To everyone who is scared or nervous, today was the surgery and i watched this video too. The most important is, drink a lot!! Like every five mins drink a few sips, also if you dont feel like eating dont eat too much because you might throw up. I barely ate and i didnt have nausea or anything. I personally experienced it very lightly so far, of course im full of painkillers etc, but it was actually kind of fun, i was worried but doctors and nurses comforted me and took good care of me. I am going to sleep at the hospital today, but i will update after I've recovered. Also, ask every question you want to, don't be shy, and ask for painkillers the moment it starts getting worse!! dont eat dry things and dont lean forward. After you're done with the operation, you will feel very strange and high. After a while you will be able to drink, and eat. When you already drank you can go and take a little walk or use the toilet, it will help a lot. Swallow very frequently because it helps with the pain and the recovery. I wish all of you good luck and smooth recovery!

Had my tonsils removed like 4 days ago. Yes it’s painful , you can’t eat much for the first days apart from very soft foods. Also you need to drink plenty of water.

If you guys have problems with your tonsils and you are adults I advice you to go to a doctor and ask em if they have to be removed or not. The older you get your tonsils out the more painful it is.

I will be 40 in a few months and can remember having throat problems since at least kindergarten. After a particularly painful and severe episode of strep a few years ago (I was sick for 3 months!), I want to have my tonsils removed, but I am so scared! Scared and scarred!!

I’m 61 and I’m on day 11 of recovery and boy lots of pain and I don’t expect my pain to be gone for another two weeks easy. But my tissues are starting to heal and I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Boy I knew I was in for it but I have to be honest it has been a rough 11 days. Remember to keep hydrated and it is a must to not let it dry out. You must stay hydrated must must must. And keep your self on a strict plan for your pain. Be realistic and consult your doctor for guidance on how to make sure your pain is manageable and managed. Follow your doctor and his guidance and trust him in your recovery

My enlarged tonsils blocked my breathing. I would sleep up to 12 hours and still wanted to sleep all day. After removal, I can't sleep more than 6 hours and 4 hours of sleep is enough for the day. More oxygen, better rest. The pain is from swelling and soreness. I had zero bleeding but my doctor said no food for 10 days. Only smoothies. So I never provoked the scabs. The scabs are super smooth and they melt like ice cream. You won't feel any rough scabs like an outer scab on your arm or leg. Swallowing and talking cause pain. Don't talk and spit your saliva to avoid swallowing. Save your swallowing for pills and water. 3rd day was the worst, day 4 got better. Day 6 I cut pain meds 75% and got my thirst and appetite back. Just sucked not eating till day 10. I lost 18 pounds.
