Tips-

-Remember that cones can and will get reused so common sense reigns supreme if you are looking at a cone of beige yarn and the cone label says crimson

-Learn the feel & smell of your target fibers

- some cone yarns are oiled before putting up to facilitate machine fabrication. Learning how to tell or ask which ones are oiled - it can prevent a gauge disaster.

Shopping tip- think about buying in sets of yarns which will work equally well singly on tiny needles or in your knitting machine or plied into fantastic new bulky yarns. This helps you burn through your yardage and prevents overwhelm.

These type of vendors can sometimes put up smaller quantities or even ply for you. Ask nicely.

When you get your goodies home, do please burn test and label everything. It makes it easier to resell or trade later.

If anyone out there knows of any places like this in NYC metro area pls let us all know!

Happy Hunting!!

I live very close to there. I made a hexagon cardigan for a friend recently and needed large amounts of cotton and ended up at Peter Patchis. Pro tip: if you ask Peter he will take amounts of yarn off the cones so you don't have to buy full cones if you don't want to. I bought 5lbs of yarn for $35.

My previous church's deacon had a friend who knits, crochets, and weaves along with other non fiber crafts such as painting and whatnot. This deacon asked one day if after church if my parents would be ok with her driving me over her friend's place to snag some yarn. I thought it was gonna be a small destash. MY OH MY was I not prepped for the amount of fiber she had in her storage closet. She gave me a big tote and told me to go crazy which barely made a dent in her stash, it was pretty much a personal warehouse. Thanks to this lady, I've gotten a few cones of cotton, polyester/nylon threads, and other yarns such as wools, merino blends, etc. I've made several baby socks knitted double stranded with the cotton coned yarn since it was fingering, which barely made a dent (maybe made 3-4 baby sock pairs so far). Her stash was maybe 3/4 of the amount shown in this video to give an idea of how much she had.

This video peaked my interest for the future if I want more yarns in a sweater qty but that will be further in the future since I still got a large stash that I've busted thru a good amount but still a long ways to go. Great video!

I’m 76 years old now and used to go to a place just outside Niagara Falls, Canada where I lived into my twenties. It was a small store and now long gone but it had a ton of yarns and cottons for weaving and machine knitting, even acrylics, cottons, mohairs and bouclés from a yarn brand I knew of. I later used some on my knitting machine, some by hand and in later years ended up giving a huge bag of spools of cotton to a friend with a big weaving loom. She made me a tea towel as a thank you. I bought one cone of lace weight lurex that I never managed to use all of even though I added it into many knitted items. I donated the rest of the cone to a thrift store when I finally tired of it. You brought back a fun memory. By the way, I love that vest and that colour on you. That shade suits you very well.

I’ve been to Peter Patchi’s. I’m still using yarn for weaving from the cones I bought a few years ago. When I went there, the owner was amazingly helpful. He seems to know what everything is that is in that warehouse. As you surmise, it is a steal. I bought a lot of unmercerized cottons for weaving towels and some rayon for shawls. I too felt very overwhelmed shopping there. If the owner had not helped me, I would have left with nothing.

My mother was a seamstress and taught me the “feel” of different yarn content. I have found a few cones in thrift stores and Mark is tight. These cones hold a ton of yarn. Thank you, Mark for this video. Very interesting and I’m a few hours away but will be making a field trip

Wow - that looked like quite an adventure! I had 2 memories while watching your video. 1. In the 1980’s, we would go on day trips from CT to the Providence area & shop at warehouses for traditional rugby shirts with the rubber buttons. I’m pretty sure they were seconds - but were a bargain! 2. The first time I walked into Webs in Northampton about 20 years ago…that was truly overwhelming for a brand new knitter! I recently went back and couldn’t believe how much it has changed.

I grew up around the woolen mills of New England and in the 1960s and 70s this was one of the few ways to buy yarn that wasn't acrylic. You might want to take some time to learn how to tell fibers apart. For example, most wool yarn that is easy to break does not have any nylon or acrylic as a blend. You can also look into burn tests. Also most of these yarn will look even better when knitted and washed.
