  This was a reenactment scene from a movie (The Buddy Holly Story) where actor Gary Busey was playing the part of Buddy Holly who had a short, but very prolific and impactful career.  He was sadly killed in a plane crash along with artists Rickie Valens and The Big Bopper while on tour in February of 1959.

  This actually happened in real life.. a white band playing in black Harlem (the Apollo Theater) in 1957 was unheard of.. but as you can see, it worked

  The New York City theater manager (who had not seen the band when he sent the invitation telegram based solely on their music) had THOUGHT Buddy and the Crickets were black although it actually was Buddy Holly and the Crickets he had intended to hire. As you can see from YouTube clips of the real Buddy Holly, he and his band were indeed white guys. The Apollo in Harlem, at least in the 1950s, was traditionally a venue where black audiences went to watch  black entertainers  perform.) The manager's statement was true. Buddy and the Crickets were the first white group ever hired (although acidentally) to play there, and (to the manager's pleasant surprise) turned out to be a big success with the audience.  I was moved by this scene, especially during the last number where King Curtis joins them on stage. Sadly the 1950s were a time of more common racial division than exists today in America, though not so much in the music world, in which black styles had influenced the formation of rock and roll. I saw this movie, a biographical picture called The Buddy Holly Story, around the time it was released in 1978. Gary Busey, a prolific actor who's a fan of Buddy Holly (the  Texas singer who died with a couple of other popular musicians in a plane crash at the height of his fame in February 1959), starred as Buddy Holly in this tribute movie. Busey, now in his 80s, is also from Texas. (The film has only 3 members in his band, the Crickets, but from YouTube footage I've seen of the real Buddy Holly and the Crickets performing, the Crickets were actually three guys in addition to Buddy. But that's a minor detail.  The Apollo situation was a true incident from a time long before the Internet and email; hence the hiring mix-up. Another trivia point: members of what became the Beatles were inspired, being fans of the Crickets' music. to take an insect name for themselves. John Lennon changed the spelling of "beetles" to replace one "e" with an "a" to reflect "beat" music, which early rock and roil was sometimes known as.) Thanks for your reaction videos.
