( I am not a professional translater, but I try my best)
Interviewer: Mr Rubinstein, we in Germany deeply regret that we can not see you perform in Germany...
Rubinstein: you can not imagine how much I regret this. It is greatest (largest? Doublemeaning in German) audience of the world. The only one suffering the loss is me. I dont go (to Germany) because in a very evil moment in history I made a promise never to play there again. Because I am an odd person. You see, I love the audience. I come to the audience like it is a lover. I play with all my heart. I would like that everything the music gives me will come a hundredfold to the audience, from my heart.
Interviewer: You can be shure that we really miss you. But we are happy that you have still connections to germany, because you play german composers.
Rubinstein: Listen, I live on Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, my beloved Mozart, Schubert, my very beloved Schubert, and my specialy loved Brahms. My musical education was completely in germany.
Interviewer: We have recently learned that you will play in Switzerland with a german orchestra?
Rubinstein: Yes, shure! I do everything I can to bring me close to the germans. But I just can not go to germany. If I would visit germany... how many (germans) would I meet, who are still alive and very guilty? Shurely hunderts, thousands, I don't want to count them, don't want to know. But they are there. They have not all been killed or died or dissapeared or went to prison. No, they are around. If only one of those would be in my concert, I would die of shame. I could not experience this. (in German he says "erleben" it could be he means "überleben" which means "survive")
Interviewer: The decision of Mr Rubinstein deprives the german audience of the encounter with the greatest livin Chopin interpreter. And further: Rubinstein is regarded as a pianist who masters the whole of piano music. He is a romantic pianist, but also modern and of utmost brilliance and clearness in his playing. Those who want to hear him in germany have to refer to his records.

Rubinstein was as diplomatic as he could be in his explanation in this video. In a less diplomatic moment, he was known to have said, "There are only two places in the world I will not play. The Himalayas, because they are too high, and Germany, because it is too low."

Interviewer: “Mr. Rubinstein, why won’t you play in Germany?”

Rubinstein: “Maybe it’s because I’m a Polish Jew who lost family members in the Holocaust.”

AR was a prodigious linguist: his German was still excellent despite not having been in Germany all those years.

The real reason why Rubinstein never played in Germany was because he was appalled by Germany's conduct during World War I, particularly the war crimes committed by German troops against Belgian civilians during the invasion and occupation of Belgium, that he vowed never to play in Germany ever again.

(His last performance in Germany was in 1914.)
