Plane on fire, wings departing, hail and thunder outside.
Nigel: “Fly the heading.”

Nigel taught you more than one lesson and that one was probably most valuable - what a guy!

Replace that switch Jon, if it is that sensitive it is not unlikely that it is close to failure. Normally a switch requires a reasonable amount of force to be activated. Sounds to me like the spring is worn out. A shroud fixes the symptoms, not the cause.

If that is not a reason to absolutely trust Nigel as your CFII, then I don't know what is. Being so calm and collected in a SEP with engine issues is just phenomenal.

That being said. I think you would have managed the situation just as well being alone. Think about it. Everything you wanted to do, Nigel agreed with. This means you did just as good in that situation as the CFII you value so highly. Great job and thank you so much for posting this.

Jon, your videos are simply exceptional and very, very human. I'm a low time pilot (currently just shy of 100 hours in SEP, 200 hours total) and have had a similar fright with an engine fire on takeoff over water that turned out to be nothing more than someone burning some shrubs and the smoke drifting into the cockpit. The startle factor is very real, and thank you for your unflinchingly honest display of it after the fact.

The universe did you a favour. At some point you were going to have a engine issue and it couldn't of happened with a better person next to you. You were really lucky with the timing of the event and having such a cool experienced head onboard to learn from.

I love your open honesty in all your videos but the value of it really shines through here. I deeply respect the courage it takes to put your worst perceptions of yourself out in public.
I'm sure there are pilots who would fly again after solving the problem on the ground but you took a moment to assess whether that was safe for you on this day and stayed in the ground, showing admirable self awareness.

Thanks for sharing this, it helps us all be safer.
