I've always interpreted Us as being about homelessness and the lower class. It's why Hands Across America is such a huge thing in the movie -- it was a massive event in the 80s to raise money/awareness for hunger and poverty, that also came with a lot of criticisms over whether such massive charity stunts were actually effective at all. Given the lifestyle and opportunities, Tethered!Addie was able to grow up and become a genuine human, the one in control of the "soul", while the Original!Addie devolved into another Tethered. It's also why they're clones -- they're Americans, they're "us". They are human beings too, but they were born down below so they don't get to count as people, they're controlled by the people up above.

Jason “controlling” his shadow is kinda hinted earlier when they’re both in the closet and they mimic each other. At least that’s how I understood it.

Only realized during this reaction that her voice was like that because she was choked out when she was little. Crazy movie.

Joke I saw on Twitter years ago:

Jordan Peele when I ask him if we can be friends: "Us? Nope. Get Out."

Lupita should've been nominated for an Oscar for her outstanding performance in US. The Academy Awards is a bias and popularity contest now.

Rabbit/ bunnies are one of the first few things scientists have been able to clone. That’s the reason there are so much! Seeing that the tethered are also clones

Hands Across America being a real thing, that did and did not help the homeless/hungry, is what makes all of this so much better.

Maybe the unpopular opinion but this is my favorite Peele movie. I love the ambition of it. The cast. The directing. Could it maybe have been executed a little better? Maybe. But I love it.

So, the movie is basically a social allegory about class inequality and American identity (including immigration).

Class commentary: The “Tethered” represent the underclass, people literally living beneath society, unseen and neglected, they mirror the privileged above ground, suggesting that prosperity for some depends on the suffering of others. The uprising of the Tethered symbolizes the oppressed fighting back against systemic inequality.

National identity: The film’s title “Us” doubles as “U.S." which means that the Tethered’s existence beneath America hints at those excluded from the nation’s promises like marginalized groups, immigrants, or anyone whose labor supports the comfort of others but who remain invisible. The “Hands Across America” motif connects to a failed attempt at unity, showing how surface-level gestures can’t fix deep social divides.

And about those DAMN BUNNIES (haha) they represent experimentation, since they’re common lab animals, hinting at the Tethered’s origin as a failed scientific project but rabbits also symbolize fertility and uncontrolled reproduction, reflecting how the Tethered multiplied underground after being abandoned without supervision.

And the scissors, aside from being (obviously) a weapon, are also a symbolism for two identical halves joined together, just like the humans and their Tethered counterparts. Their symmetry and function (cutting apart what’s connected) represent duality and separation.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Bye 😂
