  Here&apos;s a hack I use that made me an extremely unusual/unpopular mother of daughters -- all hairspray is sprayed in the garage or outside. Period! Hairspray goes everywhere, has fragrance, is toxic, sticks to walls and floors, and is a total pain to clean up. Thus, I hung a small mirror in the garage and insisted all hairspray be sprayed there.

  I have one of those plate covers for the microwave, it is not as tall as that big glass one you showed us, and I don&apos;t like plastic, but it fits a full size dinner plate, doesn&apos;t touch the food, has vents &nbsp;around the top and prevents splatters. &nbsp; Dollar Store

  I don&apos;t have kids yet but over the years when I have cared for other people&apos;s children, and they eat, I have had the rule that they can eat at the table or outside (which was in rural areas or suburban areas with outside playing space.) I am used to cleaning but I wanted them to learn to be mindful of not getting crumbs and goo around the floors, on couches, in beds.<br>Also, &quot;You may get out a new set of toys or a craft <b>after</b> you put away what you&apos;re finished with.&quot; <br>Starting when they&apos;re very little, if they spill something or make a mess, I walk with them to get their hands full of cleaning rags, go back over and they are responsible for wiping up their own mess. This can include positivity and even humour. It can be tempting to do it for them, in so many areas, but then I think how if my mom hadn&apos;t gotten me to do these things every time, it would&apos;ve been worse for me. Was from a big family, and every child had a regular daily &quot;job&quot; (chore) and extra jobs on Saturday morning. We didn&apos;t have a hired cleaning helper. We turned on upbeat music (for example, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass) and got right to it. You had to do your &quot;job&quot; before going off somewhere, unless you got permission to do it later.<br>When I think it feels tedious to help a child follow through on learning to clean up after himself, I try to think of this in part as an investment for his future.

  I put old faded placemats on top of the fridge to catch the dust. I also put my toaster in a shallow bin to catch crumbs and to make it easier to slide onto a shelf in a lower cabinet. I never take it out of the bin except to empty the crumbs.

  If the weather doesn&apos;t permit, or it&apos;s not the greatest neighborhood, or your kid is too young, you could also have your kid just trained to always have a lightweight, unbreakable, plastic bowl if it&apos;s something crumbly just to catch everything. They can do that cross-legged or whatever, but it really makes a difference.

  Phrases to remember Taryn&apos;s terrific tips: Consolidate. <br>Collect.<br>Categorically clean then group.<br>Cannot toss all the time. <br>Behavioral Modification. <br>Learned this phrase in graduate school: There is no better theory than a great practice.

  I squeegee off my showers walls EVERY time I shower; I rarely have to use cleaner on the tile walls because of this. I realize I&apos;m not battling a house full of people doing this after THEY all shower
