You know most of this ONLY applies to the European theatre of operations. Japan certainly violated almost EVERY one of these.

My late uncle severely afflicted with PTSD from his army combat service in Italy would occasionally inform me of his experiences in brief several minutes long discussions until he was again unable to talk. One revelation indicated that both armed sides were populated by normal working people trying to survive long enough to go home. On patrol duty along the combat zone opposing army fighters Would Not open fire upon each other on sightings. Both sides would merely continue their patrol.

What fascinates me about wartime history is that even in such brutal circumstances, individual soldiers could still recognize humanity in the men on the other side. Those moments of restraint and mutual respect are worth remembering alongside the battles themselves.

Mark Clark was ordered not to enter Rome but to cut the Germans off who were leaving. Clark wanted to be a hero and have his name remembered for liberating Rome yet he let an entire German army escape and his entry into Rome was eclipsed by the d day landings.
