I'm 79, had a serious heart attack 2 years ago with serious heart damage. I have done HIIT for 15 years but my damaged heart reduced my VO2 Max to 24. After doing Tabata routine on an elliptical for 2 years it is now 37.

The concept of 'reserve' really hit home. Building a bigger engine now to prepare for future setbacks in older age makes perfect sense.

I have just started to run and this is what I am doing. 3 walks in zone 2 for 1 hour or 7km each, 1 Tempo/Threshold run and 1 Vo2Max HIIT run every week. I have gone from a 29 VO2MAX in 20th of April to a 34 today. Keep pushing.

Well, I'm 71, an endurance runner who does half marathons. Garmin says my Vo2 Max is 38. But is it accurate? It can be wildly wrong with hr and I prefer to wear a heart rate monitor strap. I echo comments that running is the most wonderful activity to keep you sane, happy, and healthy. It is pure joy.

Great advice as ever Doctor Alex. I think it's worth mentioning that there is a range of DNA profiles that determine how much the appropriate training regime will impact VO2 max. The late Dr Mosley made a great documentary which touches on this called The Truth About Fitness, that is well worth a watch. As you have touched on before the central nervous system needs to be developed and bone density also,. My advice to anyone building a low risk fitness program is to reap the benefits of lower impact to build strength, bone density and CNS. I would always highlight that doing HIIT while cycling, as per Dr Mosley's documentary is less likely to cause injury than running. I am a fan of running HIIT, and feel you could have extended the story by describing heart rate zones as the ideal way to do HIIT. Also more and more research and consensus on rucking is emerging. Lower RPE, impact and injury risk, but measurable impact on key markers including VO2 max. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticising your material at all, just trying to add to it. You are doing an amazing job

It’s so true that an injury ie even an illness has such an impact on emotional health. It definitely can impact mood, motivation and confidence to resume exercise. Especially if you have had pain.

After have ng heart stents I took up walking 5km every day. Lost 10kg and got plantar fasciitis and a heel spur. Took 2 years to recover. Really need to mix your exercise regime and push within your limits.

I am glad you recognized importance movement, just keep moving. Today, I was unable to go for my walk or exercise as a result, I monitored my movement , I was surprised how similar sweeping with a broom is to rowing. My heart muscle was engaged for sure as I I swept my patio, , repotted plants, bending and standing, going up and down stairs several times. Meal prep while listening to this video Never taking a break except for breakfast and now 4:45 I am stopping for dinner. 8 hours non stop, at least on the job I had a lunch break. House work is a good work out. Thank you, I don’t feel so guilty when I don’t go to the gym, And I worked up a sweat too,!!
