This whole situation actually reminds me of a much older tradition in horror publishing, where a book would cross into another country and the “translation” would gradually become its own adaptation—or even the beginning of a locally continued series. A particularly wild example is Dracula. The original novel was published as a book in 1897, but a heavily altered Swedish version was later serialized as Mörkrets makter (Powers of Darkness). That was then adapted into an Icelandic version called Makt myrkranna, which was itself serialized in 1900–1901. Jonathan Harker was renamed Thomas Harker, new characters and plot elements were added, and almost the entire book focused on his time trapped at Dracula’s castle, while the remainder of the familiar story was condensed into a relatively short ending. It was presented as a translation, but it’s essentially an alternate-universe version of Dracula. There’s now an English translation of it called Powers of Darkness. So the Russian and Italian continuations of Shivers/Creepers feel less like an isolate oddity and more like another example of this fascinating horror tradition where stories get localized, mutated, and extended as they travel.

hi, ex dollar tree employee here! "The books will be put out whenever the employees feel like it." Is actually not as easy as you'd think. we got truck once a week and often very few things would be on the truck. mostly neccesities like food, cleaning supplies, etc. It all depends on what sells for your store, my store didn't sell a lot of books so we didn't get a lot on trucks if any at all! Id reccomend going to multiple stores to try and find them as the store I worked at would often be left out of drops other stores were getting. And if you can't find them in the books, with it being close to halloween season, look with the seasonal stuff! I made a whole display of them last year with the halloween decor!

I picked up a couple out of curiosity. One that I read was Doctor Death and it was alright as a lil kid's horror. What sent me for a loop was reading that, despite the doctor  mostly giving kids mild ailments like a bad case of pimples or diarrhea, one thing the doctor can inflict on his kid patients is straight up terminal illness. That little detail was so bonkers that instantly made the whole book worth it.

I've been picking up dollar tree hard covers for a few years cause there's occasionally a diamond in the rough. At first, maybe the parent curse,  I thought they were the Goosebumps books and thought about getting them for my daughter who loves books and scary things.

what an awesome rabbit hole to go down!! i've seen these at my local dollar tree, but without any further investigation i was always worried it was random ai slop- wonderful to know this series predates anything like that!

I saw these books at Dollar Tree and I bought 4 of them for my 10 year old niece. That's all Dollar Tree had the time. These definitely don't look like literary masterpieces, but they are a lot of fun for kids.  My niece liked them so much that I got her several more and I am still on the lookout for the rest of them.

A voice from the UK here. We had Shivers (US) here too! So no wonder the name changed! BTW, The Works chain is still going strong. Its basically a discount store for overproduced books, art supplies etc
