The DIRTIEST Corporate DESTRUCTION in History

In the shadows of London's Royal Courts of Justice, a sealed £125,000 bid changed the fate of luxury motoring forever. As aero-engine manufacturer D. Napier & Son prepared to acquire the company and join forces with visionary founder Walter Owen Bentley (W.O. Bentley), a covert backstage maneuver altered the course of automotive history. Operating through a front company named the British Central Equitable Trust, Rolls-Royce Limited’s top executives submitted a secret bid in London's High Court, seizing Bentley's assets without revealing their true identity until the contract was irrevocably signed. The Derby giant's master plan was not merely to neutralize the threat of the formidable Bentley 8 Litre—an engineering masterpiece capable of outperforming the Rolls-Royce Phantom II both commercially and technically—but to subject W.O. Bentley himself to a cruel corporate servitude. Stripped of his historic factory in Cricklewood and his personal prototypes, and bound by strict non-compete clauses, Bentley was reduced to a figurehead on his captors' payroll. However, in April 1935, once his contract expired, the engineer walked away to join Lagonda Ltd, where he engineered a cutting-edge V12 engine designed to dethrone Rolls-Royce at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This bitter corporate feud culminated in a landmark trademark lawsuit before London's High Court of Justice (Bentley Motors 1931 Ltd v. Lagonda Ltd & W.O. Bentley). In their ruling, the courts granted Rolls-Royce exclusive ownership of the founder's surname, legally prohibiting him from ever selling cars under his own name. This is the definitive story of the dismantling of a mechanical empire, interwar corporate espionage, and one creator's relentless struggle against the monopoly that tried to erase his legacy.
