The kind of deep, honest, behind-the-scenes conversation that doesn’t make it into interviews, but cuts straight to the heart of how they think, play, and create? Well, I got the chance to do just that with the legendary Brent Mason, and what I walked away with was nothing short of eye-opening. Brent Mason isn’t just one of Nashville’s top session players—he’s THE player, the guy behind countless hit songs, jaw-dropping solos, and unforgettable guitar hooks. In this video, I sat down with Brent to uncover five things that even die-hard fans might not know about him, his playing style, and his creative process. This is more than a “meet your hero” moment—it’s a masterclass in musicianship disguised as a casual conversation. We cover the stuff you never hear about—from how Brent approaches music stores and tries out guitars (hint: he’s not showing off chops like most players do), to how he crafts those instantly recognizable guitar parts that have made their way into your favorite songs. You’ll hear him talk about the simplicity behind his brilliance, how he focuses on melodies that captivate audiences rather than impressing fellow musicians, and why he plays a chord differently than you might think. If you’ve ever thought you were nailing a Brent Mason solo, you might find out here that there’s more going on under the surface than meets the ear. And here’s something you won’t want to miss: Brent dives into one of his most iconic tracks, Brooks and Dunn’s "Workin’ on My Next Broken Heart”—a song that guitarists all over YouTube are playing wrong. He breaks it down part by part, showing the subtle nuances and details that most people completely miss. And as if that wasn’t enough, Brent also reveals what he wishes he had done differently on that track. It’s the kind of insight that only the artist himself can share, and trust me, you’ll never hear the song the same way again. Plus, Brent shares his thoughts on tone. Want to know how to actually get that unmistakable Brent Mason sound? He breaks it all down—from the amps he swears by (yes, it’s all about that Fender tube tone) to his surprising insights on touch, compression, and even slapback delay. You’ll also find out why he plays harder than you might expect and how his picking technique—complete with a touch of funk-inspired snapping—gives his playing that extra "pop." But perhaps the biggest takeaway? Brent’s uncanny ability to instantly create the perfect part for any song—a skill that has made him one of the most in-demand players of all time. He reveals how he develops this creative intuition, and it’s not what you think. If you’re chasing that level of mastery or just want to play like Brent on your cover gigs, his advice in this video will change the way you approach the guitar. ___________________________________________ 00:00 Intro 00:27 What does a pro guitarist look for when buying guitars? 00:54 When you're in a music store, do people come up and ask you to play your famous licks/solos? 02:04 How does one develop their ear to always come up with the right part on the spot? 03:26 How to REALLY play the solo in "Workin' on my next broken heart"?
