38 to 40,000 nilgai in Texas.... Even if there were 300,000 nilgai in the wild, that is a ridiculously small number as anything other than novelty food stock. There are 12 MILLION head of cattle in Texas alone.

Could it be because people have to pay private ranchers huge fees to hunt them? Asking since Im not in TX but reading they are mostly on private land

Who said we don’t eat it the only reason it’s not on the shelf is because they aren’t a standard livestock animal

The cost of hunting them on private property is the problem

My bet is that big beef lobbyists with lots of $ keep all wild game out of the distribution chain. Even a small amount of non-beef red meat is a threat to those guys.

Nilgai that I’ve had is excellent, lean, and brilliant red.

Get the fact right first off. Being from Corpus Christi, I have heard the story several times.

The animals were brought in to help feed the ranch hands on the King Ranch.

As the heard grew they were then a guided hunt opportunity for the wealthy. Now they have expanded all south Texas.

And as far as the meat goes, it is very lean and tasty. I cooked mine like venison.

Back in the early 2000s they had to shoot several of them, they created a migratory route down to Brownsville crossing the Brownsville ship channel then Rio Grand and back, they tracked them down with helicopters and took them all out once they crossed back across the Rio Grand. It was done to prevent a certain tick that was in Mexico which was not present in Texas.

Please ! In India they are easy to hunt . It’s not really sporting to shoot them; that is if you can get a license. In the 60s and 70s they were shot for the pot and not as a trophy.
