Why Don't Predators Attack Humans While We Sleep?

Right now, somewhere in the wild, a mountain lion is sitting a few feet from someone asleep in a tent. It arrived twenty minutes ago. It knows exactly where the soft parts are. It could close the gap in three seconds. Then it stands up, turns around, and disappears without a sound. Trail cameras catch this constantly — predators standing over tents, sniffing sleeping bags, staring at unconscious campers, then simply walking away. We've been asking the wrong question. It was never "why don't predators find us while we sleep." They do. The real question is: why do they decide we're not worth it? Every wild predator runs a fast, brutal cost-benefit audit before it commits to an attack — and a sleeping human fails it almost every time. We climb inside that audit, question by question: Why the hunting reflex itself needs fleeing prey to switch on — and why lying perfectly still makes you disappear from a predator's radar entirely. Why you smell, look, and even stare like the wrong thing to eat. Why one injury is a death sentence for a wild predator, and why gambling on an unfamiliar, upright, front-eyed creature almost never makes the math work. And the 2023 savanna playback study that stunned researchers: across 19 mammal species, animals fled the sound of calm human voices nearly twice as often as they fled hunting lions. We also go honest about when the audit breaks — the real story behind the Tsavo man-eaters, and why almost every recorded man-eating predator in history turns out to be starving or injured, not bold. Then the twist: you weren't ignored out there. You were found, studied, and quietly acquitted — over and over, in a courtroom you never knew was in session. 💬 Have you ever slept outdoors in genuinely wild country? You were probably visited more than once. 🔔 Subscribe to Poko for the hidden science hiding in plain sight. #Wildlife #Predators #Survival #AnimalBehavior #Nature #Science #Poko
