  Darias crush on Trent made her even more relatable as a character. A teen girl with a crush on an older guy is pretty common, and she eventually realized she liked the idea of Trent more than Trent himself.

  The crush humanized her. It showed that she was still a teenage girl with normal insecurities and desires, despite her aloof demeanor.

  I always liked that Trent brought up the age difference with him and Daria and Jane. It was always a joke of Trent saying “don’t you think I’m too mature to be around high schoolers?” Because we the audience and the characters know Trent is immature as an adult. But he still knows he is an adult and being around teens like that or using Daria’s feelings as an excuse to get with her is wrong. He knows this and points it out because he wants Daria to understand that it’s not personal, but he will not return her feelings and sees her as a kid, an extension of his little sister. He respects Daria and appreciates her for her friendship with Jane, but he is not interested in her, drawing a clear line while never embarrassing her about her crush. A lot of other shows would get them together and try to justify it somehow but Daria refused and I liked that.

  I loved the long arc of Daria’s crush on Trent and how it was inevitably never gonna live up to her expectation. Might have been the most realistic depiction of a crush in a cartoon I had ever seen at the time.

  Trent may be a burnout, but he’s a good person that genuinely cares about his little sister and Daria. And I think that’s part of the reason so many people like him despite him being shiftless.

  I said this on Reddit but tbh Trent&apos;s fucking underrated for how he handled this whole thing. the show could easily have gone in SUCH a creepy direction there, and he&apos;s not above teasing Daria about her crush at points (so I understand why some viewers were skeeved or just didn&apos;t like him lol). but they <b>didn&apos;t,</b> and instead you get the sense he was kind of just giving her space to figure it on her own (underneath just being too passionate about his music to pay attention). good character I like him

  The thing you forgot to mention is that every preteen/teenage girl watching this show had a crush on Trent. He seemed to just transcend type and taste. We all had a crush on him.
