Our VFW with Ken Wiseman

Ken Wiseman didn’t join the VFW for the bar. He joined because a Vietnam veteran named Frank Lamson wouldn’t let him sit on the sidelines. Joey “Devil Doc Talk” Martinez sits down with Ken Wiseman — U.S. Navy veteran, medically retired after 13 years, and National Judge Advocate General of the Veterans of Foreign Wars — for a straight talk on what the VFW actually is in 2026. Not the myth. The work. They cover Ken’s path from a 92 ASVAB and submarine/ship duty to firefighting instructor in Pearl Harbor, how overseas counter-narcotics time made him eligible, and why the first post meetings almost ran him off. Mentorship pulled him back in. Buddy Poppies. Recruiting. Resolutions. Then the national fight. In this episode: • What VFW eligibility really requires — and how to check yours at vfw.org • Why most Posts are not “just a bar” (only about 20% even have one) • How member-written resolutions drive VFW policy — and why they expire after 5 years • Ken’s role as National JAG: appeals, bylaws, discipline, and testifying on the Hill 30+ times a year • Claim sharks, caregiver programs, MIA/POW recovery, and why “do your homework” is the whole speech • How to start serving again: Post, Auxiliary, or VFW Action Corps The VFW is what you make it. If you served overseas and you’re sitting this out, this episode is the tap on the shoulder. Watch it. Share it with a veteran who thinks the VFW isn’t for them. Then find your local Post and ask how you can help.
