My Dad played trumpet in the 50’s and 60’s with big bands. He said he saw it from New York to Los Angeles and everywhere in between. The black players and singers were only let in back doors, not allowed at finer restaurants. Their hotels were often different. But, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra changed an entire generation of people’s perceptions. And, that’s the kind of star power it took to just start the shift. <br>It didn’t happen overnight, but it was a start.

To non believers, Sammy Davis jr went through this over and over. The friendship those guys had was very special, at a time it wasn’t popular.

As a young teenage singer, I worked with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis and Joey Bishop a few times as each of their opening act in clubs in Philadelphia, Atlantic City and New York City. It was so obvious that their friendships and love for each other wasn't just something on stage - it was real. I made my last show in the lounge of the Flamingo in Las Vegas 2 days before I went into the Army in early 1969 and Dean, Sammy and Joey came out unannounced and shared the stage with me. After the show the three of them took me out to dinner and the next morning Joey drove me to the airport where I flew home to Philadelphia to get sworn into the Army. We kept in touch throughout my Army career, even sending me cards and letters when I was in Vietnam and later in Germany and Korea.
