Forget dark hallways and spooky mines, having hope in an MMO might just be the scariest thing in gaming

Calling Zephras a cataclysm zone is dead on. Starting at Cata they made leveling zones into a straight circular path. In Elwynn you go from the middle, then south, east then back over to the west. In Zephras you circle the island once and then you've done everything

What feels so weird about the Sky Elf intro is that it’s basically the only Classic racial cinematic that doesn’t feel like it’s talking to *you*. The old intros make you part of the race: “your people,” “your sworn duty,” “you must uphold the traditions,” etc. The Sky Elf one talks about them like they’re somebody else’s race. It makes the player feel like an observer instead of actually being a Sky Elf.

TheoryWise’s videos should just be mandatory conference room viewing material at Blizzard at this point.

31:31 - another huge point. QOL is a reward space. Osrs learned that along time ago. Half the grinds an ironman does is for QOL inventory saving items. Fish barrel, hunter kit, rune pouch, coal bag, reagent pouch, ect.

Regarding Blizzard, during Blizzcon this year a woman running a panel discussing the existence of Hardcore WoW revealed that when developers brought it to her, she wasn't sure, went on a holiday, and during her holiday developers had to set it up behind her back and without managements knowledge. Upon her return, they showed her, and she basically said "fine, sure, whatever"

I wonder how many times employees went to managers, producers, etc. with these ideas, for years, decades even, and each time one person on a ladder of executives stopped it because they just didn't feel like it.

They made the elite dragon crest more cartoony than they ever were. It's not bad art, but the OG was great.

It seems that modern Blizzard has now become so good at guiding players along; leading them down the correct paths, creating grouped questing hubs, and avoiding back-tracking for a "better" experience, that they haven't stopped to ask themselves IF applying all those modern-day philosophies could be harmful to the old-school experience. They remind me of helicopter parents, equating good parenting to leading your kid down the path of least resistance. We need struggle, we need to think about our next moves and fight to get ourselves out of awkward situations. Otherwise we're just turning cogs that have already been put into place. A journey of ups and downs will start feeling more like a predictable, successful slog.

13:54 This is an excellent point that I've never considered before. It makes the player feel herded along. It's like the choices and accomplishment are taken away from you because the quest designer has correctly predicted - as per their design - where you would be at this point in the quest and how far along your XP is. That is the opposite of the Classic experience.

Quest design feels stuck between 2 exclusionary moments.

Parent gamers who dont have 2 hours to just do one quest, and then young gamers who have a worse literacy rate than those born between 1984-1992.

A kid born in 2013 on average would be very unlikely to enjoy Morrowind unlike the kids born in 1989.
