Every Battlecruiser Used in Combat Explained | Jutland to Guadalcanal

Why did some battlecruisers explode while others survived? This military history documentary follows the battlecruiser from HMS Invincible and the Battle of the Falkland Islands to Jutland, HMS Hood, Repulse, and the rebuilt Kongō-class ships at Guadalcanal. We examine how speed, armor, ammunition handling, magazine protection, flooding, damage control, radar, aircraft, and torpedoes changed the fate of these enormous warships. At Jutland, Indefatigable, Queen Mary, and Invincible were destroyed by catastrophic explosions, while Lion survived a shell exploding inside her Q turret. Seydlitz absorbed extraordinary punishment and returned home, while Lützow flooded beyond recovery. Those different outcomes reveal why battlecruiser survival was never simply a question of British versus German armor. The story then continues through Goeben / Yavuz, Courageous, Glorious, Renown, Hood and Repulse before reaching Japan's Kongō, Hiei, Haruna, and Kirishima. The Japanese ships began life as battlecruisers but were extensively reconstructed and reclassified as fast battleships before their Second World War combat service. Where a shell hit, ammunition-handling practices, flash protection, flooding, ship design, and damage-control decisions could all affect the outcome.
