  Shelly making peace with the abuse she received doesn’t make it not abuse. I always get a little frustrated about this conversation. I think it’s great that she came to appreciate it after the fact but everything everyone says including her make it clear that it was psychological torture.

  What you&apos;re saying is that Kubrick didn&apos;t mentally scar his actors although he absolutely mentally scarred Shelley just because he didn&apos;t traumatize anyone else the way he did Shelley. That&apos;s a big YIKES

  I think in Shelly Duvals case, it&apos;s worth noting that she was a woman in a male-dominated industry that&apos;s known for taking advantage of both women and young people. If she&apos;d made a big fuss about her treatment on set, I have no doubt she&apos;d have been blackballed in the industry, with nobody wanting to hire her for being &apos;difficult&apos;, &apos;hysterical&apos; or any other such word used to dismiss a womans feelings and experiences.

  Consent is nuanced. If it&apos;s not /informed/ consent with the ability to change your mind at any point then it&apos;s not truly consent. And the ability to change your mind doesn&apos;t just mean you can physically say no - it means creating an environment where the actor feels <b>safe</b> to say no.
